hot end not hot enough?`

Prusa i2:

I am trying to get past my first print. Using ABS, I've set the extruder to 230c and the bed to 110. When pronterface tells me it;s up to temp, I try textrudede a bit, and I get bout 5mm and it spins, but no more ABS is taken up. I have tightened the door as tight as I can get it.

I suspect the hot endjustjsut not getting hot enough.crankedmked the temp up to 340 just to test, but when gets to about 275 (according to pronterface) it throws and error and tells me to fix the problem (???) and restart the printer..

Just before it throws the error, the extruder seems to work a little better.

Three questions:

Anybody find an easy way to check the temp for accuracy? My laser temp gun usually read much much lower than pronter face, but I don't know that I trust it either.

Charlie
Is there something in the configuration that would cause it to throw and error atBuda

Got a "budda style" hotend from China for $70. Might I have screwed up?

Anappreciatedd be appriciated.

Well, there is the a setting in Sprinter that controls the max temperature and automatically shuts down the heater, but it shouldn't need to get that hot to extrude. It could be any number of things. Some pictures may help. The laser thermometer you're using may not be accurately reading the core temperature, then again your thermistor may not be properly configured.

I tested the temp using a multimeter thermalcouple that I think is farely accurate. Turns out the temp runs about 20 C below what marlin reports.

Glad to send pics, but not sure what picture would be helpful

I have also found that when I get the extruder up to 230C (pronterface reports almost 270) it seems to extrude ok. But when I start the print, there is a long pause while the temp drops to about 180C (pronterface reports < 200), it won't extrude. Is it normal for the heat to be dropped before the printer starts printing? See log below.

The gcode has a lower temperature set, you need to change the hotend temp in your slicing software.
