If you axis is skipping...

If you axis is skipping without making noise, check to make sure the set screw on the belt pulley is tight. (That is assuming it's an axis with a belt pulley.) I have two set screws per pulley and one of the two had stripped out. Had to switch to a cut down M3 bolt.

Mine isn't skipping, but it is making a weird rattling noise whenever the y-axis moves. It's a prusa-mendel. I'm wondering if it's the bearing. It *was* skipping a lot on the y-axis until I kicked in the acceleration control on my G-code.

Turn the printer off and see how it moves by hand. If all seems OK there, I would suggest you check the v-ref voltage on your pololus.

Another way to fix this issue: "Planes can be machined with a simple Dremel. You can control pulley position with nail varnish on the axis and the pulley. Now you are sure pulley will not slide again!"

If they slip again I had planed on the dremel. Nail polish holds pretty well though?

A flat file will do a good job of putting a flat on a motor shaft.

Also, if you tighten the set screw or screws, then loosen and slide off the pulley you will see marks where the set screws(or grub screw) impacted the shaft. If you just file or grind those spots down that will help a lot.

Alternatively, a small drill can be used to make a dimple or depression where the marks are. Set screws grab well if they are seated in a recess of some kind. Any kind of thread locker will help hold things long term.

Isn't it a pain when something simple like that lets go near the end of a big print!?

Sure is yvan. I replaced that set screw and seen that was indeed the problem. I should take it back apart and attack it with a dremel though before it does come loose on a big print.
