Different settings between PLA and ABS?

Different settings between PLA and ABS?

Hello,

When you switch from PLA to ABS, or vice versa, are there any settings which you want/need to change, other than the hot end temperature?

I'm getting a lot more blobs and ooze outs with ABS when printing with the same settings I've used on PLA (except for the hot end temperature). There are so many blobs that knock the hot end causes X/Y steps to skip, eventually causing the printer to print the subsequent layers on a wrong (shifted) position.

I get somewhat less blobs with a lower temperature, like 215 or 220c, but there still are ooze outs and blobs. Also, I just had a failure with extrusion at 215c (hobbed bolt chewing into the filament instead of pushing it), so I went back to 225c. In other words, lowering temperature probably isn't something I can do to reduce the ooze out.

I am going to try different retraction settings tomorrow, but I wonder if it's normal to change retraction settings between different materials like this. Both of my PLA and ABS filaments are fairly accurately 3mm thick (caliber reading 2.98mm), so the only things different between these two filaments are the material (well, I know it's a huge difference) and the color (PLA is black, and ABS is white).

i have different profiles in repetier/slicer for each material, and tweak each profile "on the fly".

yes, each material different settings(temperatures, retract, speed is same i think...)

about machine speed, i print @30-40 mm/sec, but when i have a lot of parts and it will last long then i just slide feedrate bar grinning smiley

for me, trimming line nylon oozes a lot more then abs or pla..i think i retract it 0.8 mm, while abs or pla is 0.3-0.5mm in my system..
