J-Head Hot End. Help?
October 16, 2013 09:35PM
So I was thinking of getting my J-head hot end as a kit from makerfarm (link below) and was wondering what the the install kit for ramps was for. I plan on using RAMPS 1.4 for my electronics but, do I really need the 40 W Ceramic Heater kit. It says its for RAMPS but I have no idea.

Store Link- [www.makerfarm.com]

Thanks,

No, you don't need the heater cartridge, the included power resistor works just fine. I'd order it right from the source at hotends.com though.

I have looked at that website before and it seems like they are out of stock most of the time. confused smiley

Read the site more carefully. They put inventory up for sale at the end of the week. Knowing their schedule, I've never had an issue with being able to place an order. I've read so many bad things about j head clones, and I know there are a lot of reputable vendors out there, but the only way I know of to make sure you're getting the real thing is to go direct.

So I should order from Hotends.com? When I do order, What should i be selecting for the orifice option? Thanks.

If you're just starting out, I'd go with an 0.5 or 0.4mm oriface. The smaller the oriface, the more it's prone to jamming up. Believe me, you do not want to deal with a nozzle jam when you're just learning how to calibrate everything.

The developer of the J-Head has a blog. He occasionally buys J-Head clones to evaluate them.

He seem to think those by Makerfarm are good (blog post is from Dec. 2012). [jheadnozzle.blogspot.com]

The latest Chinese clone didn't even have a PTFE liner! [jheadnozzle.blogspot.ca]

His blog also has a list of vendors.

My first one I bought from an unknown source on ebay and it never failed me and I used it for several months after I built my printer. I still have it, I just don't use it because I have a newer j-head with a smaller oriface and a shorter barrel. YMMV.

Hi I am a newbee to the foram.I have a rapman 3.1 and had a blocked hot head.Cleared it by drilling it out with a .4mm drill bit.Problem is I am getting a temp fault making me think that a wire was damaged in the moving around to clear it. Is there a replacement head that will fit.Other wise I have a lot of spares for sale and material in various colours.moody smiley

I think you would do a *lot* better with a post in the more general areas and a new thread. Burying the question way down here pretty much guarantees it goes un-noticed. Been there / done that ....
