[Help!] Could someone slice something for me please.
January 07, 2014 06:04PM
My Nephew has found a model on thingiverse and asked me if I could print it for him.

I usually use slic3r, but it's just not happy with the model. I could try to use skeinforge, but I'd have to spend all night installing it.

The model may not be manifold anyway, could someone please, PLEASE, Pretty Please, please...

slice it for me !

I need it resized to 130mm long and sliced. I only ask incase it's something someone can do quickly.

It's this. (1950 Buick Car)

believe me, you will make a small boy very very happy if you can...

Try running it through Cura, otherwise as it is, this model is unslicable due to the nearly 6000, yes 6000, separate errors in the mesh.

Remote slicing for someone elses machine is an involved request due to all the variables. As an example, I run MACH3 with manual heat control and my extruder is A instead of E, I post process out all M codes for temp control. If I tried to slice for someone with a Makerbot, it would certainly be some work to configure my slicer for that machine.

Cura will slice it with the errors.

Many thanks for the steer...
I am now downloading Cura as I type !

Unfortunately I think your chances of slicing this model are very slim or zero. I just tried with Cura and it's extensive stitching algorithm, and the result is far from printable.

If you find models with only minor errors then Cura should work okay.

Apologies, while Cura will process without crashing, most of the body of the car is missing in the slice.

On closer look, it's an incomplete mesh. Unrepairable unless you manually repair it. I hate when models like this get posted on Thingiverse!

Even after repair and ziping the file, its too big to fit into reprap.org

What did you repair with? I know anything like Netfab will not correctly repair a mesh this bad.

Well..

I have had fun! Nothing printable though.

Cura brings it in and shows it as a complete mesh on the screen, but after slicing, it has large lumps missing. You sort of know don't you... you know if there is not a picture of a thing printed on thingiverse, it doesn't print.
Anything in plain blue, I don't usually go near.

So I hunted around for any other Buick 1950 models, found a few on the sketchup repository. nope.. they don't slice.. (but to be fair, they weren't posted on a 3D printing repository).

by the way Cura has a scale feature, so I scaled it down to fit my bed, and was so annoyed, I pressed print.
I got half a car ;-D

doors are missing, boot lid is missing, I stopped it about half way through before I wasted any more PLA !

thanks for looking at it chaps.

Dave.

PM sent, in case you can email it. Would be awesome if it's printable !

That stl has over 47,000 errors. Very bad stl.

Just more random uploaded shit STLs people find on the internet. TV is full of them.

Currently printing on a MakerFarm Prusa i3. Curiously awaiting a PeachyPrinter.

That Model was not created with 3D printing in mind.

Now it looks like they blocked in the windows and removed a few features, but you have to do a lot more rework on a model like this before creating an STL

That was nonmanifold from the get go... need to strip it down to its basic shape and make it one solid.

I could be wrong but it's probably a car from Google Sketchup library. It's shell looks to have no thickness in spots (single sided polys).

If you look closely it also has the Google Sketchup person near the front-right wheel. I think the model is this one: [sketchup.google.com]
