Illustration of skins for my Darwin

I am by no means an Industrial Designer but I can use Illustrator pretty well. Since my Objet printed Darwin will be in my office by other RP machines I have decided to make some skins for it. Here is the illustration of what it will look like.



All of my hardware is ordered as soon as I get some electronics I am off to the races.

This might be interesting as with a cover like that on RepRap you might manage to maintain a slightly higher ambient temprature. From the various postings regarding heating the bed and the printed material this might help prevent warping.
It will at least prevent drafts from affecting the print area.

Looks good. How are you going to fabricate it?

If you are planning to run ABS you might want to add some fume extraction.

One of the large frame machines at work should do it. Then bring them to my paint shop and I can get a nice metalic grey finish on the panels. I also have an Acrylic bender and a laser cutter to make the window/door.

Also covers would help keep bed temps consistant. That will help with warping. All of the FDM machines I use at work are heated to around 200 degrees F. They are like ovens with extruders in them.

Hmm thats a very high internal temprature the REPRAP electronics could not stand 93C and work still most are speced around the 70C temprature.

Maybe moving all the electronics out of the seald work area having all the stepper motors and drive chain systems mounted externaly and using an externaly mounted Bowden type extruder would make drastic improvments to print quality?

You are correct I was just planning on letting the nozzle heat keep the ambient temp higher than outside and haveing the electronics enclosed. However I just realized that the extruder is also going to need some protection. I think I will need to make some covers for that with some insulation as well. Good thoughts.

That is a possability. We will be tinkering with this RepRap a lto after it is built so we shal see.

I have a heated bed and no enclosure. About 85 C is enough to keep ABS from warping in my early experiments. I hope to try it at lower temperatures when I get my thermistor working on it.

Very cool...I mean warm...I mean...yes heated is the way to go. All commercial FDM systems have a heated envelope.

It is good to have Industrial Designer friends.

I know too bad just the labor making the body panels would make it a $5,000 + printer.

The X on the side could be replaced with a large metal version of the replicating machine warning logo, which is pretty simple to reproduce.

I thought about using that somewhere. Maybe as part of a logo, I think it is going to get a name other than RepRap.
