Help! Print layers don't line up...
February 06, 2014 03:15AM
Hi everyone,

I've been calibrating for a week now on and off. I'm finally nailing in some good data, but I have a new problem and I'm unsure where it's coming from.

Please see the pictures I attached:

You'll notice that the calibration seems to be getting better over time. However, the third box (rightmost in pics), you'll see that the layers are not building one on top of the other, so I'm getting these jagged levels.

Note that this is on my Y Axis and not my X Axis -- only two sides are affected.

I'm guessing it's got something to do with my hardware, but as I haven't changed anything since those first two prints hardware-wise, I'm not sure what it could be. One thing to note is that my Y Axis belt has much more tension than my X Axis belt... could this be causing it? Or is it something in software I'm missing?

Thank you for your help!

You are missing steps, your pulley is slipping, or you are binding up. Check your vref, tighten the set screws, make sure yor are moving freely.

Also, be sure your machine speeds are not set too high. If your motors can't handle the torque of moving that fast, they can skip steps

Maybe some lubrication on your bearings? Also, unless you are doing this on purpose to save filament, you need to up your Axis Steps per Unit for the extruder to get a more solid print.

From what i can see you are under extruding quite a bit increase your E-steps about 5% as for not lining up most common problem is skipping steps which could be from either to much or to little power, also lower your acceleration to 1500 and maybe jerk on Y to 15

Poly i had the same issue with y axis, just up the vref on the steppersmiling smiley

Yes it could be your voltage set On the stepper drivers, google how to set vRef pots on stepper drivers. I think I have each of mine set to around 0.3v to 0.4v that seems to work for me. You can tell by the sound of the motors if you have them set correctly they shouldn't hum or loudly sing when in motion.

Your steps set for your extruder look like they need an increase. Or try tightening you extrude idler as much as possible and then losen 2-3 full rotations to allow for increase and decrease in the filament size.

If you send me the info below along with a copy and paste of your firmware configuration and the config file from your slic3r settings or profile save of Cura if that's what you are using. I could guide you with your calibration.

What printer are you using?
What extruder are you using?
What size rod is your z axis
What pulleys are you using? Gt2 etc

Hey, quick question, how do you change these settings? My mendel i2 is skipping after a certain layer (similar to OP's problem), and I've read that I should change the acceleration or power for the motor... But I don't know how to change the config.

Thanks.
