My first print: How to correct errors?
June 06, 2014 06:06PM
Hi,

I have finished building my 3D printer and after struggling for a few days I've been able to print my first non-calibration related object: Yoda

The original object was larger, I've shrunk it down to print faster. It measures 4,8 cm ear-to-ear. I've printed with 1.75 mm ABS, hotend is 220 degrees and the heated bed is 95 degrees. As you can see there are some problems.

The first problem is at the level of chin. A small piece of filament sagged down. I assume it is due the lack of support or the lack of adequate cooling (I haven't mounted cooling fans yet).

The second problem is at the eyelids. They have formed some blobs and are disrupted.

The third problem is at the ears. There is some stringing and the quality is not very good. It may not be very obvious but there are small holes, one in each ear.

So, how can I ameliorate my print?

Thanks...

ABS does not like cooling fans, as they cause warpage.....

I would start with you retraction settings. Looks like you may be oozing a little too much. You may want to play with the extrution multiplier, hard to tell, but I think there looks to be too much ABS being laid down.

What is the best test object for the extrusion multiplier? I just extrude a certain amount of filament and mark it and measure it by calipers. Is there a better method?

Set the extruder up manually, as you described. Then, tweak the extrusion multiplier in software as a job runs to compensate for over/under extrusion. After manual calibration, I found that an extrusion multiplier of 85% makes the best objects on my printer since I had over-extrusion. You can crank it up over 100% if you have under-extrusion.....

I'll try your suggestion. I have decided to cheat a little bit and painted it smiling smiley I think it looks better now.
