Faulty full graphic smart controller repair

Hello,
I've got a Full graphic smart controller from hobbyking and it was DOA.
I got my money back without requiring me to send it back.

The issue is that when I first used it I could only barely see the text with contrast pot set at maximum.
After a few minutes of testing it was no longer possible to see text. Backlight works, menu beeps and functions work.

Anyone know the electronics enough to suggest the likely cause of this fault.

1. Try to resolder the solderjoints/pins of the trimmer
2. Replace that trimmer with same type/value

If the problem persists, I would return the display.
Could be just a very simple issue with a soldering joint or a defective small component but the time for searching and fixing this wouldn´t be worth the trouble.

maboo well it would be worthwhile as they've already given him a full refund and let him keep the faulty part.

If ethics are involved, it should be responsibly recycled per local regulations since the seller refunded the purchase price.....

On the back of the circuit board behind pot there is a place for a surface mount component which is labelled 'RV'. Does anyone know what, if anything, is supposed to be there?

Edit: Don't worry. Nothing goes there as per ebay pic I found. Pot measures good (5k pot). everything else looks ok.
