Are my stepper motors good enough?

Are my stepper motors good enough?

This is my first post so forgive me if it's in the wrong section.

I'm building a RepRap Prusa i3 from scratch. I've bought some nema 17 stepper motors but they are only 33mm tall, i.e. half the height or the normal ones.
Looking at the specs on the machines I see that they max torque at 12V is 0.35Nm.
I've read somewhere that the torque should be 0.4Nm.

The question is will they work or hould I sell them and get some better ones?

Any help appreciated.

My Ormerod uses 33mm tall stepper motors with 0.22Nm holding torque and they are adequate. I doubt that the prusa needs more, especially if you are prepared to use slightly lower acceleration. What matters more is the maximum current per phase and the voltage at maximum current. These should be in the range 1 to 1.5A and 2.5 to 4V. They need to be 4-wire stepper motors (6 wire are also OK).

I own a Prusa I3, and the motors provided with the kit was mostly 33mm Nema17. IMHO, the 33mm motors are powerfull enough for Z axis. If you don't want a direct drive extruder, 33mm nema 17 is enough. For X and Y axis, I upgraded for 48mm motors. The small 33mm stepper motors only allowed me to print at low speed. With bigger motors I'm able to double the printing speed. I could upgrade the bed plate for an aluminium one without loosing steps on the Y axis.

Thanks for the advise.
I'll keep them and see how they go.

If you really want to know about motor torque required to do a specific job, see
