extruder gears are pretty useless

extruder gears are pretty useless

Hey ladies and gents.

I just finished a kissel mini build and everything except for the extruder motor seems perfect.

Wondering if anyone has a solution or an alternative system they prefer. I have the printed part that presses a bearing against a gea . But once the length of the feed tub is fed with filament. The filament stops feedin . I have tried adjusting the tension to no avail.
And the filament eventually clogs the extruder gear. And if someone is willing to ship me something or print a better option, I'm happy to pay.

If the filament cloggs the gear, there's maybe to much pressure or the gear quality is not good enough. Do you have a picture ?

You are blaming the problem on the extruder, but both tube and hotend might be at fault. If filament gets stuck in the tube it's not the extruder fault, if you have an all metal hotend and you are not cooling it properly there is nothing that the extruder can do. Also, how good is your hobbed bolt?

I use both direct and gear extruders and I have less problems with the geared one.

Ya. I tested all that. I unhooked the feed hose and pushed a piece of filament through with no effort and it extruded.
I took it apart anyway and see no obstructions either. Ialso manually fed the filament through but at a slower speed and it would extrude a bit before jamming in the gear.

And the gear seems pretty high quality.

HI,
Is it a Kossel mini kit we are talking about? If so, are you using exactly the parts shipped to you by the kit seller? If so, I would suggest contacting the seller and trying to get some official support.

Now, if you are building the Kossel mini yourself from various parts bought on the web, I would suggest trying to get hold of or printing yourself a Greg's Wade's Geared Extruder with a Bowden adapter, that is much less prone to flament jams.

This is a direct drive extruder swap the moter for a geared one or else swap the whole extruder for a geared one such as a Wades one and your problems will disappear

That looks like a geared motor to me.

Hey Doug,

I'm new to the printing world but do you have a link for what you are referring?
I'm pretty sure this one is geared though. There's an added housing for gears on the axle.

Sorry I missed that onw Nophead is much more informed than I so listen to him!!!

The second I get this to start ringing I will print the parts for that extruder gear.

Since it is geared stepper, you might have to change the feed rate in marlin. It might try to go to fast and chewing on the filament. Lower the feed rate and test again.

Ya, I was asking the seller about the speed.
Is there a recommended setting for the speed? And is that in the config.h file or merlin_main.CPP?

Its in configuration h file, I can't tell you what feed rate will be best, but start from half of what you have now and move up from there to fastest allow.

So I've been playing with that for hours and slowing things down has improved the extrusion a little bit. At this point it gets a couple layers into the raft and then jams. And I think I know what's going on. Every time it jams, I pull the tension bearing from the gear cover and the filament is always folded over itself on the side. The tension bolt is off to the side. So I think there is an angle of pressure if that makes sense. When I use my hand to add a little pressure to the side the bolt is not on, it seems to be reliabl .

Like most have said here, you might be feeding too much filament through it. I cannot tell you exactly what the steps/mm should be. You have to properly calibrate it. What I do to calibrate is remove the bowden tube, and extrude 100mm. I measure that with a caliper and do the calculations on what the steps/mm should be. This page [www.instructables.com] may help you get to the right direction.

I did the math and its pretty accurate to the amount steps per mm, i think i only had to correct it slightly from the prebuilt config file.but thats just the math to how many stpes is equal to 100mm i think the speed is the issue so im trying to find the speed, starting low and moving up.

Thanks for the article!! its a great guide!
