I'm using the Mega 2560 R3 control board with the Ramps 1.4. If I just change the ramps 1.4 board and use the same Mega board, do I have to reinstall the firmware again or is everthing on the mega 2560 board.

No, you don't have to reinstall the firmware if you change the ramps 1.4 but keep the mega 2560. The firmware is actually written to the flash memory in the MCU (the big chip on the Mega 2560 printed circuit board).

You WILL need to make sure the new RAMPS board has the same jumper settings as the old board. Specifically the microstepping jumpers beneath the stepper drivers have to be in the same configuration.

The reason I'm asking is that my heatbed will not get hot and I was told that the mosfet might be bad. So if I have to take the board apart, I might as well just change the ramps. the bed starts to get hot, the red led goes on but not for long. That's as far as it goes.

Changed the Ramps board this morning, Headbed now works. From what I can tell it looks like one of the leads on the mofet is broken.
