Folger Prusa i3 2020 Full Aluminum

I was considering the Floger i3 and saw this i3 2020 full aluminum. Is this new?

***PRE ORDER ONLY: KIT WILL RELEASE AND SHIP AFTER 5/20/2015***

This one doesn't have the infamous acrylic frame. I wonder how good is their 2020 Aluminum Extrusion. Their parts might not be as good as the Wilson ts, but could this be a good entry point?

For that price its worth the risk. I'm sure its a good printer once assembled and calibrated.

Looks from the photo's that it may need some bracing to keep the Z Axis verticals solid but should be very easy to do Well worth the chance!

Wow, I want one at that price!

Folgertech has unbeatable prices. They have drastically reduced prices on the kossel kit. You would be hard challenged to source all that yourself cheaper... Especially with shipping and frustration

I'm very tempted to get this. The price is great! I have been on the fence on buying their Kossel vs their i3 for a while now. They were supposedly working on a 3rd printer of their own design that would ship pre-built, so I decided to wait on that. Now they put this improved i3 design and I might just not wait any longer.

I read form their FB page that they will have the option of 200 x 300mm xy frame. I am interested in that option.

This kit looks interesting. I've been on the fence about which of the many kits to buy and have more or less settled on a Folger after reading the other long thread on these forums about it. I am not keen on acrylic frames, as an aluminium one looks good. Replikeo is about the only other one I've seen with a steel or Al frame at a price I can afford.

From the picture at [folgertech.com] it looks like the Z axis motors are mounted at the top of the uprights. I wonder if this has any implications for the overall stability and resistance to vibration. (Likewise for the filament spool hanging off one side.)

Me too, I am concerned about the filament holder. Perhaps, a replacement can be printed to improve the filament holder.

@Chris33, Understood. smiling smiley The design is not identical to the Prusa.

Hello new guy to the world of 3D printing. After searching around for a decent printer for a small amount of coin. I stumbled upon the FolgerTech 2020 i3 and it seems to fit the bill. So a few days ago I ordered one and it should be here Tuesday. Getting kinda excited.

Looking forward to hearing your experiences. I ordered one yesterday, no ETA for delivery yet.

I ordered their acrylic model, and then saw this one. Got a little official word on their differences.

Dan from FolgerTech
Print quality is going to be identical. As for the differences, the aluminum is going to be a sturdier printer, and easier to upgrade and modify. The acrylic is nice looking but it's a bit harder to upgrade and requires more parts, where the new printer you can just extend your 2020 beam and add a larger print bead to make it bigger, or wider to add dual extruder. I recommend the new printer honestly. But if you are going on print quality they will be the same.

Dan

So not too many differences, nothing worth sending mine back over, but it is cheaper, and technically better, however not as supported as the actual prusa i3 (yet).

I am so excited for you all, please keep us updated with your assembling progress. I am waiting for the 200 x 300 mm option to be available. Talked to Dan the other day, his estimated date is around the first 2 weeks of June.

In a way i'm bummed because this was already available when I got my acrylic version (that I just got in the mail today), but oh well! I probably wouldn't have upgraded the bed anyway.

Don't be bummed.... you have one that is well-supported and well-known.... by the time you'd get the other version it'd probably be the third week of June... i.e. another three weeks or so. Folger also seems to have a history of underestimating the lead time on some orders. That seems to be better as of late, but food for thought.

They are planning a 2020 upgrade for the acrylic folks from what I read. My 2020 kit and goodies should be here this morning.

As for the extra mass at the top, it should make things more stable. The quick jerking of the head won't be able to move the vertical arms as much.

Hi,
I should receive my 2020 aluminium in a few days.

Can someone tell me if I have to load the software into the Arduino, or will the kit be delivered with the software already installed?

I am a complete novice in this area, so I'm glad that this forum seems so ready to help new guys, as I'm sure I will be needing some.

regards to all.
