Folger Tech Kossel 2020 motor issue?

Hey fourm! So I got my kossel 2020 kit in a few days back and have it all built up and ready for programming!! So far with the kit im very satisfied, the construction overall went smooth with a few tweaks. But now unfortuantley im running into my first and hopefully last problem. For some reason when I enter the g28 code in printrun to have all the motors go to the endstops, only the motor that is in the Z axis will move. No other motor will move unless I plug it into the Z axis connections. I have no idea why its doing this but I want to see if any of my fellow 3D fanatics can help me resolve this issue??

Is that the config that came from Folger? I finished mine a few weeks ago, and it came right up on thier config, with no need to change much of anything, and using thier procedures.

I would try moving your drivers around on the ramps board. Mine came with 1 bad driver (luckily they included a spare) and this is what mine did, except only 1 axis wouldn't work. Have you set the voltages on your drivers yet?

Ive been trying to set the voltage on the drivers but they're nit reasing correctly. I can only get reads on the opposite side of pins.

Yes, thats their config, im in the process of tunning my stepper drivers to see if that makes a difference. Im having plenty of trouble just trying to that. And are you saying that you didnt have to do any firmware modifications really?

IIRC, I set the specifics for rod length, and the Z axis max, and was able to print. All the pertinent settings are already in the Folger downloads.

Never had a bit of an issue setting driver current either. Meter probe from the end pin on the driver to the left of the pot to the pot wiper, twist, good to go (and about that quick). My only problem was that the Chinese knockoff Molex power connector burned after a couple of hours, and I had to replace it.

Does the extruder move? If so, swap the drivers for E and Z with X and Y, and see if the problem follows. If so, the it's software or a problem in the Arduino or Ramps. If it moves, then it's the drivers. Have you been able to read the motor current settings yet? This is a passive setting that doesn't even require 12V power to the RAMPS, if I recall correctly. About the only thing needed to read that is a DC voltmeter set onthe 2V scale . . . .

And, at the risk of asking a stupid question, when you downloaded from Folger, you did get the downloads for the Kossel and not the Prusa, correct?

I did download the kossel 32 tooth. When testing the drivers I had to use the right top pin instead of the left, becaue the left for some reason wouldnt read out to me. Ill try swapping out all my drivers with the ones off my prusa i3 and see if that works. I'll let you know

There is only one set of pins to read that will be correct, so getting creative setting voltages will make a mess of things . . . and the Folger directions for doing that are correct as written - read (with the pot on the end of the board away from you) from the far pin on the left to the pot wiper (the part you put the screwdriver into to adjust).

What scale was your meter on when trying to read the driviers?

And how old is your kit? Folger has been shipping 20 tooth pulleys for a while, although that won't cause your problem . . .

Also, what happens if you try to home with G28?

So, after switching out my drivers. The Z axis is the only axis that still moves. nothing else. I know its not my motors because Ill plug them into the Z axis connections and they work. Im assumming this might be a firmware issue? IDK

It sounds like either bad IO on the Arduino, or somehow your pins.h file got knackered, and the drive signal is not getting to the right pins. I suppose a defective RAMPS with some bad traces could do this as well, but to hit two separate functions the same is unlikely. You do have the RAMPs and Arduino fully seated onto each other, and no bent pins, right?

You might also try redownloading Marlin (try the 20 tooth variant as well - that's the one I can vouch for) and see if anything changes. If all else fails, I can offer you my config, but I moved up to Marlin1.0.3-dev, so you would need to get that as well.

A photo of your installed RAMPS might be helpful as well, if possible.

Sorry for the wait, i had state championship for track. So i got all 3 motors up and running!! But now im running into another issue.. When i type on the code foe the motors to go down to 50mm above the heat bed, it only moves down a little. And is no where near 50mm close to the heat bed. I cant seem to figure out the issue, can you help me out one more time please?¿

Did you home with G28 first? If not, it won't know where it is starting. If Z=0 is not tip on the bed, you need to adjust the value in the Configuration.h until it does. Then G1 Z50 F4000 should put you at 50mm . . .

MANUAL_Z_HOME_POS gets set to the distance from your endstops to the bed. If G1 Z0 ends up above the bed, increase it. If you hit the bed too soon, decrease. MANUAL_X_HOME_POS and MANUAL_Y_HOME_POS both set to 0 on a delta.

(On my Folger Kossel, the Z home is about 254 . . . fwiw . . . although from the Config you posted earlier, that should be where you are set . . . you are using the *MAX* endstops, right? Mine was pretty much good to go using the Folger config guide . . .).

Check which connectors on the RAMPS the endstops are plugged into, or close one at a time by hand and execute M119 (or is it M114? . . ) and see which activates. On the Kossel, all the tower endstops should be MAX. The Folger docs have good pictures of where this wiring goes as well. . .

Ok!! So everything is working!! But I have basically 3 small problems now. One, the motors get really really hot, im assuming im pulling to much current unless they just naturally supposed to get that hot. Also on my board theres a red light on instead of green, everything is still completley functional besides the fact when I try to run the printer to make my first print. Nothing happen, so im assuming something is going wrong. By the way the reason it took me so long is because my board for some reason went shot so folger tech sent me a new board.

The red LEDs on the RAMPS card show FET channel activity, so will correspond with the drive to the heaters, and once things come up to temp, will flicker as the heaters are controlled.

When you try to run a print, how long have you waited? Not sure what slicer and control software you are running, but with Slic3r and Pronterface, you will see the bed heater come on first, and nothing else will happen until it gets to temp (you can monitor the temp in Pronterface). Once the bed is hot, the printer will home, and xome down closer to the bed, and then wait for the hot end to get to temp. Once that hits, there is a brief delay for the hot end to stabilize, and then the job will start.

So, no motion at all could be due to a bed failing to heat, not at temp, or unable to reach target temp. Some mothion and then nothing would likely be hot end issues, same possibilities as above.

Ultimately, if the printer will take G code (Home, move, IE G28 and G1), it's responding to the same stuff the printnjob will send . . .

My axis motors run pretty hot too, but the extruder stays cool. I'm not too happy about it, since it is causing the printed corners to deform, but it works, and I have other equipment that runs steppers a lot hotter. I have considered trying .3v instead of .35, but frankly, my rails were rough enough at first, I needed the power to break them in without skipping steps.

Tim, so i finally scrammbled some time up to work on the 3d printer and yet again i ran into another error. When I try to start printing i get a m999 temp error. I cant seem to find the resolution to this error.

Are the thermocouples plugged in and working? Mine would read something like 345 degrees when not plugged, and trip the MAX_TEMP limit. as you are seeing. If you are testing without the heaters and thermocouples, you can temporarily increase the MAX_TEMP values to allow you to play with motion (just remember to put them back when you are done . . .

What temps do your bed and hot end read cold? Should be 25 to 27 or so . . . and what are your high and low limits set to?
