Printing RP parts with Makerbot
October 11, 2010 08:22PM
Hi,
I'm borrowing a makerbot so I can print off parts for a mendel. Unfortunately it seems like some of the parts (like x-carriage-lower.par) are too big for the build platform. Is there a way around this?

Thanks in advance.

People have printed mendel parts on makerbots before now without a problem.

I am able to print x-carriage-lower.par on my makerbot. I print it horizontally lengthwise on the X axis. It just barely fits.

Ok I sank the screws down so they're flush with the build platform and tried printing horizontallly. Printing raftless is a disaster and printing with the raft has failed twice.

Pretty much requires printing raftless and you'll need a heated build platform if you're using ABS. I was able to get it to print using PLA on an unheated acrylic platform.

Well I am using a hbp without a raft but the extrusion sticks to its self and screws everything up.

Try to get the raftless skeinforge plugin which slows down the first layer to make it stick easier.

gogogo, that is the hardest part to print on Makerbot period. Grok's advice works, also you can print a small raft on it if you size it.

If you are printing pla
you can use painters tape on foam core and cut the foam a little longer than the build platform. This is how I print wades main body and the x carriages. I used to use foam core all the time but I now print on painters tape directly on the build platform. I find I get quite a few uses out of the painters tape and the parts are rock solid flat. I secure the foam core to the build platform with small alligator clips. You have to watch where you put them so they don't hit your z bars
