Trying to understand Endstop, X,Y,Z Home

I'm at the config stage of my build.
Here is my setup
p3steel
Face me the endstops are placed as followed:

X = right side
Z = Lower left
Y = Rear

In Pronterface
when I press Y-home the bed moves to the rear, when it hits the endstop the bed taps the endstop a couple of times and stops <<< Is this the expected behavior?
when I press Z-Home the axis lowers to the endstop but when it hits the endstop - It continues to try and lower. <<< Why won't the endstop trigger a stop?
Have not done anything with X yet.

Thanks
Steve

Yes, it will change speed between tries, that allows to beter find the endstop position

From pronterface or repeiter send an M119 command to see the state of the end stops.
I'm not sure what controller board you have, but there is a MIN and MAX set of jumpers for each axis.
In your setup X is Max, Y is Min and Z is Min
