Overheating stepper drivers, make sure you have a fan blowing on them . too much or too little motor current can lead to shifts. Belts or pulleys that are too loose. Binding carriages/bearings all contribute to layer shifts.

will adjusting the current of the drivers reduce heating?

With proper adjustment of the stepper motor V-Ref current will keep the stepper motors running cool.

May I ask what you built in order to fully understand what your V-Ref Current adjustment current range should be.

Layer shifting can also be caused by Loose or tight belts, binding smooth rods with linear bearings ect... ect...

I'm using
ramps 1.4
A49AA stepper driver
17hs1352-p4130 stepper motor

is it ok if the stepper motor pulley and the idler pully hav different number of teeth and width?

Is this stepper motor being as a dual Z-Axis stepper, if so is it wired in series or in parallel.
Almost forgot the most important question is the power supply 12 or 24 volts.

Max current on this stepper is 1.3 amps
V-Ref current center should be about 0.355 for 24 volts
V-Ref current center should be about 0.698 for 12 volts

Which axis is this stepper motor being used could you post a diagram of the how the gearing is being used.
