Is it possible to increase printing speed in a 3D printer based on Marlin?

Is it possible to increase printing speed in a 3D printer based on Marlin?

I thought speed was a matter of whether use or not a32 bit mother board.
But recently I heard somebody to say that it is a restriction of Marlin.
Is it true?

No!

Many klipper users are under the delusion that Marlin is slower. This is not true,

You do need faster controller CPU. In klipper its a raspberry pi doing the heavy work, in Marlin you need a 32 bit board

... I was moving with up to 400mm/s with Marlin4Due on an ArduinoDue (32Bit) ... could be even 800mm/s, but the moving range wasn't long enough to reach the speed with acc-/decceleration ramps smoking smiley

Thank you very much!
It is specific for this board.
Does this board need some other like a ramps?
Or it has all the ports for the rivers and whatever?

... I'm using the ArduinoDue mostly with a RADDS board (similar to RAMPS, but modified/optimized for the more powerfull/bigger/more_pins ArduinoDue vs. ArduinoMega).

But we (the company i was working then with) developed a "comercial" board for the ArduinoDue too, with buffered 24V-I/O's, 4 motor-sockets/plugs and buffered DAC's and ADC's too smoking smiley

Would this high speed work with any other 32 bits board?

... why not? -- it's essentially raw processing speed - and all the actuall 32Bit-Boards should be fast enough, if not "underpowered" smoking smiley

I would avoid the btt skr mini e3 v3, While it is a 32bit board its actually about equal to an 8 bit board. no floating point, slow mhz, old Cortex®-M0+ tech

Hi Dust,

... is there some development around the ArduinoGiga? -- interesting concept, but didn't see it buzzing around confused smiley

Do you recommend Ramps working with ArduinoDue?
Is there any other board that can support 5 motors (2 in z axis) and all other hardware like in a Graber or Prusa?

... don't know the actual RAMPS versions and their possibilities -- with the RADDS board: it has 6 Pololu-style sockets for stepper-drivers ... and I have two types of "expanders" with adding either 2 Pololu-sockets and a display, or 3 sockets and some I/O's more ... but this seems to be more a "local" solution (Germany)

stock ramps is not due compatible, 5v vs 3.3v issues, worst being they are shorted together on the ramps.

What about this 32 bit board MKS Robin Nano V 1.2?

Hi VDX and all!
What hardware do you recommend with RADDS and Arduino Due?
I am thinking about starting with a more simple 3D printer, with 5 motors (1 extruder and 2 motors supporting z axis).

... do you have a RADDS? - if not, then check for more modern boards -- my "ArduinoDue+RADDS" development was many years ago ...

I am thinking about Ramps FD or RADDS.
It seems that RADDS is a good option.
I am just wondering if I can use one of the slots for one more motor in z axis instead of another extruder.
Is it possible?

... RADDS has 6 slots, so it's possible.

I have two "expanders" which'll add +2 or +3 slots, so more than enough (if you can find/buy them or the PCB-files for DIY).

I've been talking with the main developer for FT-MOTION input shaping in Marlin and he recommends "a board with an FPU, like SKR3 or Octopus Pro with the H7 MCU"

You need good input shaping for higher speed printing.

But here is an example he posted of a 14:12 min benchy on Marlin with his latest FT-MOTION code, and unlike more extreme speed benchy it still looks like a benchy! . (his hotend is now his limit)

Ramps FD or RADDS, together with ArduinoDue would not work?
If I reach 100-200 mm/s it is enough.

The due does not have a hardware floating point unit, so runs floating point maths slowly

... I was testing with Due (RADDS) with up to 800mms ... but couldn't drive this fast, as axis only 300mm long, so max 400mm/s smoking smiley

Yes, you can increase printing speed on a Marlin-based 3D printer by adjusting settings like print speed, travel speed, and acceleration in the firmware or slicer. Upgrading hardware, like using a better hot end or stepper motors, also helps. Just keep in mind that going too fast can affect print quality and may cause layer shifts or missed steps, so it’s a balance between speed and precision.
