RAMPS 1.3 connection Question
August 31, 2011 04:18AM
Dear all

I am trying to build a REPRAP
and would be very grateful for your advice

I have bought an assembled RAMPS 1.3 board and would like to know how the motors connect to the RAMPS board
I can see has sockets for the A4983 driver to plug in and 4 header pin parallel to them

Are the motors plugged into the 4 pin connectors on the board orĀ are the motor leads soldered direct to A4983 driver?

if they are just plugged in what connector type would I buy for the motor cable ?

are there instructions to attach connectors to the cables ( I am still an electronics noob)

Many Thanks for your help

As for me, (2x RAMPS 1.2)

I found the 4 pin connectors way too wimpy for duty.

I soldered instead to the board what I had at hand: recycled HDD power cables terminated with the usual female HDD molex connectors.
The motors connect to those with male molex connectors.

Ugly, but worx winking smiley

Just to pre-empt tear and wear on the boards solderings, I injected some hot glue around the junctions of the cables with the board. (even uglier). Taking care not to plug the drivers connectors with glue.

I'd prefer screw terminals, but there's no room for them in the current design.

The 4-pin connectors on the RAMPS works just fine for me and a lot of other people. No need to go through the extra trouble with HDD power connectors.

0.1" connectors and crimps are usually rated at 1A per pin, so will work in our application.

I do prefer 0.156" connectors that I use on my own board, but the standard RAMPS connections work just fine.
