Prusa i3 rework X Y and Z axes not moving

Prusa i3 rework X Y and Z axes not moving
March 14, 2015 07:00PM
I built a Prusa i3 rework from parts and I have everything working... except the X Y and Z axes. Ive tried adjusting the pots, reconfigured the firmware and tried different firmware (1st Marlin now Sprinter) but all they do is make noise and dont move. The heated bed works, the extruder turns, the hotend heats up and the fans run, just no life from the axes. What the hell am I doing wrong?

I would check the motor wiring to make sure the pairs are correct:
[reprap.org]

Run an M119 to see the status of the end stops.

Ill double check the wiring of the motors again, and see what gives with the endstops. Will report back when done.

Ok so this is what the endstops are coming up with:

x_min:H y_min:H z_min:H

Double checked the wiring in the motors one more time and they are wired in like they are supposed to be but no life.

An update: I swapped the stepsticks around and that didnt work, plugged each motor into the extruder pins and disconnected the belts and lead screws and all the motors turn but will not turn when plugged into their prospective place on the RAMPS board. Tried to make sure the firmware was set up correctly but since this is my first go round with the firmware side, I have no idea what the hell Im doing other than what I find online and making adjustments to the printer on my end. I can copy and paste my config if needed but Im at a loss and before I replace the RAMPS board, I want to make sure its not something configured wrong or something.

Any thoughts??

There are little Phillips screws, trim pot, on rash stepper driver... You acn adjust the power going to each motor by turning the screw. Turn 1/4 turn at a time until it move correctly.

I've done that, spent the better part of a day messing with those things and still nothing.

Compare your configuration.h file to the file in this Github. [github.com]

That's the file I've used on many machines. If you have a standard i3 Rework build it should work out of the box.

Ok so after doing the comparison between the config files and all that I still have nothing, sort of. I accidentally hit one of the home buttons and it tried to home, which cause the bed to move to the end of its travel. Did the same thing with the x axis and it did the same thing. But if I click any of the move buttons to move it in either direction it just makes noise and does nothing. The extruder still turns like it always had and everything else does what its supposed to do but its still mostly status quo with the axes.

Assuming you know how to flash Arduino/ Marlin ( not sure as you havent said what control board you are using)
you could try the simple test program
It cycles the steppers and pulse the hot end and bed ( at least on a ramps board it does)
Its independent of temp sensors and end stops and a good tool to bench test stepper
If you use it on a machine make sure your x axis and y axis are in mid position before you load it as it move then back and forwards but its difficult to predict which way first
also take filament out of the extruder because the extruder motor cycle exactly the same as the axis steppers

test software is here [reprap.org]

Ran the test program, everything moves. So it looks like a configuration issue in the firmware somewhere that is keeping this thing from moving the axes. As to where Im not sure, but the axes do move with the test program. Yes I have a RAMPS board v1.4 and and arduino mega 2560

well if you load Marlin then try again and if it stll doesnt work post your config.h file so we can take a look
you could also let us know your belt types / pulley teeth etc

also once Marlin is loaded send an M119 command in pronterface to check the endstop status . Should show triggered or open

This is a feature to protect your printer from burn up in flames if it has
a thermistor coming off place (this happened to a friend of mine recently and
motivated me writing this feature).

The issue: If a thermistor come off, it will read a lower temperature than actual.
The system will turn the heater on forever, burning up the filament and anything
else around.

After the temperature reaches the target for the first time, this feature will
start measuring for how long the current temperature stays below the target
minus _HYSTERESIS (set_temperature - THERMAL_RUNAWAY_PROTECTION_HYSTERESIS).

If it stays longer than _PERIOD, it means the thermistor temperature
cannot catch up with the target, so something *may be* wrong. Then, to be on the
safe side, the system will he halt.

Bear in mind the count down will just start AFTER the first time the
thermistor temperature is over the target, so you will have no problem if
your extruder heater takes 2 minutes to hit the target on heating.

Where did you get Marlin ?? the config h you posted looks like its for a very specific machine with 4 hotends !

I would recommend getting a clean new version of Marlin>[github.com]
then replacing the config.h file with the one posted by vegasloki above.
( note : this configh assumes you are using full micro stepping ....all jumpers are installed on the ramps boards under the stepper drivers)

That would be a good starting point
Then of course you will have to configure steps/mm to suit your XY axis drive pulleys & Z to suit the threaded rod.
When installed dont be surprised if you can only move the axis in a positive direction. This is normal until you have homed the axis.
but DO NOT try to home until you are confident the endstops work or the axis will crash !!!

Endstops
so M119 reports them to be open. Now press and hold one of them and do the M119 again . DO each one by one They should report "TRIGGERED" when pressed
If not then you need to check your wiring and the config.h
it will depend on your set up and what type of endstops you have used and whether you have wired to the NO or NC contacts

In regards to where I got Marlin, the link you suggested is where I got it from, I downloaded it again and compared it to the one I had originally and its identical, line for line and so on. So if there is a different thing I should be seeing then this isnt it. I swapped over to sprinter since I was having issues with configuring Marlin and well that was a bust as well. So Ill have to keep tinkering with Marlin and see what gives. Ill swap out the config.h file and see if that gets me anywhere as the one vegasloki referenced was very different than the one I downloaded, twice now.

The endstops do show triggered when depressed and the m119 is sent, so that appears to be working. So close but yet so far...

I just checked and for some reason the stable links back to the development version ...strange and no idea whats going on there.

grab 1.0.1 stable here

Ill grab that just in case this one I have goes awry. I did manage to get them all moving finally, the jumpers under the step sticks weren't installed, and the instructions I followed never mentioned them so I never installed them at all. Now they all move, but now to home them and get that out of the way so I can start printing, but how do you home them?

In order to help you set up config.h we need to know some more about your machine

what drives the x and Y axis
what kind of belts and drive pulleys ( for example T2 belts on 16 teeth pulleys)

what kind of threaded rod drives the Z axis

what kind of extruder are you using

do you have a heated bed

what kind of hot end are you using

a few photos would help as well

OK the Marlin version you have is a development version and can contain all kinds of stuff that may upset your printing . You really should either download a stable version ( but the link has problems as weve noticed ) or download from my link
Trust me. development version are for developers !! We have no way of knowing what they are experimenting with and the effects it may have !!!

SO when you have the clean stable Marlin go to the folder Marlin and replace the config.h file with the one from vegsloki link above
Then i will know what your set up is and can help.
the steps per mm will work on your machine ( line 454 in confg.h) 80,80,4000,455
the only one you may need to tweak is 455 to suit your extruder

SO before power on set X and Y axis to mid position
Set Z to at least 30mm above the bed ( tip of hot end to bed surface.

Load pronterface and connect to your machine
on the manual control panel click X axis plus 10 ( it should move 10mm to the right) based on you sitting in front of the machine as shown in the pic
click Y +10 it should move 10mm away from you
click Z + 10 it should move 10 mm up

Report back how that goes first then we can try homing
Whatever you do have the power supply cable and or switch close to hand so you can kill power if somethign strange happens

Good luck

Oh yeah and before i forget
get a cable tie and strap the extruder wiring to the top of the extruder stepper motor.

as you have it now the stepper motor connector will take all the load from movement ( not good) and you stand a chance that the wires may go into the extruder drive gear ( definitely not good grinning smiley )

And how many teeth are on the extruder little and big gear ???

The big gear for the extruder has 43 teeth and the little one has 10. I downloaded marlin and cannot compile it now, found another download for 1.0.1 and it failed to compile. I cant get anything to compile anymore the IDE chokes up everytime either windows updates or I disconnect the arduino. Gonna have to switch to a different machine because my current laptop wont cooperate. Gonna have to finish this on my raspberry pi or something
Re: Prusa i3 rework X Y and Z axes not moving
March 22, 2015 11:20AM
What version of arduino are you using ??
I always use 1.0.5-r2

Ok so with a ratio of 43:10 and a normal hobbed bolt ( about 7 mm effective diameter) you should have

3200 x (43/10) / (7 * 3,142)) = 625.63 steps/mm

so in config.h your config line for steps will be

80,80,4000.625.63

Ill plug those in once I can get Marlin to compile and the IDE to cooperate, but I have to replace my hard drive as it died and Ive lost everything, so I have to start from scratch all over again. Plus I have to fix the belt on the y axis as it slipped out of the retainer and the zip-tie gave up the ghost. As far as the version of arduino Ive been using, its whatever was available for me to download at arduino.cc which is 1.6.1 last I remember.
Re: Prusa i3 rework X Y and Z axes not moving

Hard drive failure aside, I cannot get the stable version of marlin to compile at all, using both the 1.0.5-r2 version of the IDE and the 1.6.2 version. Tried doing the same thing on my raspberry pi and it throws the same errors so I dont know whats up. Sprinter yielded not so good results as it wouldnt move the axes but one way. For now until something else can be done, ill have to use the dev copy of marlin, its the only one that compiles and works as of now. I just mirrored over the settings and commented out stuff I wasnt using. I used the stuff you gave me to plop into marlin and so far everything is ok. Hopefully I can start homing this thing soon
Re: Prusa i3 rework X Y and Z axes not moving

Ok so now that everything is at least moving and all that, how would I go about properly setting up the centerpoint and homes for the x and z axes, the y hits the endstop and stops with any drama, the x wants to keep going past the endstop and the z behaves like the y but the tip of the hotend wants to sit on the bed instead of floating just above the bed. Any clues?
Re: Prusa i3 rework X Y and Z axes not moving
April 03, 2015 10:20PM
dont worry about the centerpoint for the moment. Its more down to your slicer software where the print takes place.

with the power off.... manually move the bed to the center of its travel in Y . Move the print head to the center in X and raise it 10mm off the bed

If youre not using max endstops ( most people dont i think ) look for " //#define DISABLE_MAX_ENDSTOPS" in config.h and remove the "//" from the start of the line.
That way M119 will only report the min endstops

Power up the machine and connect to it.
Type M119
All should read "open"
Press and hold the micro switches one by one and type M119. The one youre pressing should read "triggered" when pressed. If it doesnt check your wiring etc.

Z height is a question of adjusting your bed height or moving the micro switch position
Re: Prusa i3 rework X Y and Z axes not moving
April 03, 2015 11:44PM
Okay so I now have the Z where it needs to be, all of the endstops when M119 is sent show open and triggered when depressed. The only thing is the x axis still wants to try to go past the endstop even though it triggered it. Gonna have to set an offset I suppose
Re: Prusa i3 rework X Y and Z axes not moving

If you have standard parts, x end stop needs to be set to max in the marlin. (X_HOME_DIR). Also if ramps you need to check you have the switch plugged into the correct header on the board, there are six headers for end stops, both a min and a max for each axis.
Re: Prusa i3 rework X Y and Z axes not moving

I was plugged into the wrong header for the endstop, now its good to go. Now that I have everything wired in correctly and all that, can I begin printing a test print?
