How do I upgrade the pirntable area?

I have never owned a 3d printer.

I'm looking to buy a Prusa I3 (a kit)

I'd love to be able to print 300mm x 200mm pieces.

I see that some do sell kits with larger print-areas, but, to satisfy my curiousity, I've been trying to figure out what I'd have to do to upgrade the printable area?

What material would I need to buy?
Any programming/configuration?

Could some one point me to what I should readup on?

For a standard i3 you would need.
Longer threaded rods
Longer smooth rods
A longer drive belt
A bigger print bed

Interestingly through a build mistake I ended up with a printer that only has a 160mm y axis and I have not had anything I wanted to print require anything more, otherwise I would have fixed it by now.

Bigger print bed may also require a bigger power supply.
