A few months ago I got myself a FolgerTech 2020 i3. So far the machine has been really good but I want to make some changes. As a starter machine I have started to find that I need a little more umph out of it. Being so new to the world I need some advice. Im sure this has been covered before on other posts but I had trouble finding the information I was looking for via search.
I want to update my power supply and change or add another print head to the printer.
I have a bunch of old computer power supplies (500w+) and I was thinking of changing mine out for one. I had to up the voltage of the 350watt that came with my kit to 14 volts in order to get my heat be hot enough for abs. I would like to get that back down to 12 volts. I explored using an old psu for the heat bed only but I think I would rather stick to using a single power supply for the entire system. My understanding is, to get the power I need for my heat bed I need more watts if I am to maintain 12 volts. I thought about using an old pc psu because I figured it can supply the wattage and I could also use it to power things like the LCD and a Raspberry Pie for an on-board interface. Before I do this I wanted to see if there were any recommendations. Any reasons to
not go this route? Are there any off the shelf power supplies made with the 3d printer application in mind that would be better recommended? I don't want to sail blindly and fry my printer.
The second thing I want to do is add another print head. Ive read that the modified MK print heads this kit came with are ok, but there are a lot better ones out there in terms of print quality. I don't mind putting another modified MK on this but I wanted some suggestions. Like would changing the hot end really yield that much better result? I thought about going with two e3d lite6 hot ends, but then I am a bit lost for filament drivers i am only familiar with the direct drive kit that came with this. Any pointers would be much appreciated.
