Have you done the calibration of your axis? Z steps might be off.

Or your extruder or hotend might have failed?

You are a genius. ....

During heat up, the steppers aren't on, so yes, it's not holding position. Activate steppers and it holds firm.
So, need to move z a mm to activate stepper.

Must be another way to switch on steppers? It's not connected to a pc, and the LCD just has option to turn steppers off, not on.

Run the homing procedure from your LCD panel.
It will turn the steppers "ON" and holds position after all axis find their home. (For a minute or two anyway)

Problem solved , stock marlin firmware had z axis steps/mm set to 4000 when it should of been 2560.

Not so fast, what kind of lead screw you have? It sounds by that number that you don't have 1/16 micro stepping, can you check in your board if you have all the jumpers plugged under the stepper driver (if ramps).

2560 is correct for 8mm threaded rod with 1.8 degree Nema 17 and 1/16 microstepping.
