Every layer slipping problem put together

Trying to print this model: [www.thingiverse.com] And several like it. I scale them up 1.25x. .1mm layer height, 200C nozzle, 45C bed. PLA. 50mm/s, though I dial the speed down to between 80 and 90 %. 20% infill, 20% grid support. Slicing with Cura.

Around a centimeter into the part (or about an hour of print time) I hear a clacking sound, and I look at the printer to find the Y axis has skipped a tooth. It's always the Y axis. I think the nozzle is impacting the part. Always at the same height, and it always causes a problem with the Y axis, not the X axis. I also notice that my Z axis motors are quite hot. Y motor is actually quite cool (I have a Folger 2020 that shipped with a big Y axis motor and small X and Z motors). The part slips by the span of one tooth on the belt.

It's the fact that it always occurs at the same height no matter which kind of dinosaur I'm trying to print that's messing with me. Should I try to fix it, or throw it away?

Try reducing the Vref on the hot steppers. Also add cooling fan to your stepper drivers.
I have 1V on Z axis motors and they run at "room temperature" or lukewarm.

If your stepper driver gets too hot, it will shutdown for a moment and during that time it will lose steps.
I noticed this when i had too much current in the steppers and they were running hot. They eventually lost their position.
Homing (or running the end of opposite direction) the X/Y axis would have its belt jumping and really bad sound once it hits the limit switch.

I figured I might need to reduce the current to the steppers, but is that really going to be the problem here, given it's the Z motors? It's not like they're constantly moving.

Well, as far as I can tell, the dinosaur's tail is starting to curl around the edges from heat as it's printing, and the nozzle catches on this and causes the Y axis to slip a tooth. So I'm going to sell my PLA and buy some PET-G. If it's anything like this T-Glase I've got, I won't need another kind of filament.

I did turn down the Vref, and the motors are running cooler now. Didn't solve the problem.
