White Squares in LCD Smart Controller!

Managed to assemble a Folger Tech 2020 Prusa i3 Kitwithout much fuss.
However, when the system is powered up, the RepRapDiscount LCD Smart Controller
only shows two rows of white squares.
The electronics in the kit;
Ramps 1.4
Arduino Mega 2560 R3 Clone
RepRapDiscount LCD Smart Controller (sold separately)

All connections (wires, cables, etc) have been checked and verified.
Googled quite a bit also.

Any ideas as to what to do next?

Sounds like the contrast of the LCD screen needs adjusting. Is there a trimmer pot on the back of the circuit board?

Also might want to check firmware, that you enabled the "discount LCD" and not "full graphics discount LCD"

Most likely you have the wrong LCD selected in your firmware as mentioned before. If it was already working, then stopped for apparently no reason, you may have fried your 5v regulator.
