All prices in NZD, including shipping.

5x NEMA17 steppers (link from IRC channel bot): $88

Ramps 1.4, Arduino and stepper boards: $123

Heated bed: $30

J-Head Mk V-B : $72

Filament's cheapest and easiest from Diamond Age.

I've zero vested interest in any of these sites - just interested in how cheaply one can get started in NZ. I would like to build a second "standard" printer as a get-you-started gift.

Buying a head instead of building basically means you're paying for R&D, which is just fine by me given that it's probably the most dimensionally critical component.

Cheapest set of vitamins, anyone? Cheapest printing option for the printable parts? Any pay-it-forward options in NZ?

LM8UU Bearings (4 pack) : $10.30

Skate bearings are a dollar each on Trademe if you search for "abec bearings".

12v 30A power supply : $41

That is a very good price for what is by far the best type of power supply. Free shipping too.

This is good value considering it is freight free: 3D electronics pack

Wow that looks like a great deal. Does anyone recognise the sockets on the little endstop boards and know where you would get cables for them as the pack doesn't appear to include them.

Some kind of JST connector?

More details here, anyway:

looks like the connector found on old CDROM drives for the anolog CD audio so an old audio cable might work
like [www.impc.co.nz]

LM8UU Bearings 10 pack $8

Kapton Tape Heat Tape 50mm x 33M $9.65

8mm Smooth Rod $21.30 3' (914mm) not including shipping

I made a more metric hot end this weekend. After doing a bit of research I'd recommend sticking with hotends.com as opposed to cheap ones from ebay. A lot of work has gone into making Brians ones work and the ebay ones just don't seem to follow his plans very well.

How much did the hotend cost you shipped to your door?

The price in the first post looks correct.
I machined that one on Saturday. It's M8 rather then imperial and uses nichrome rather then a resistor.
To be honest I'd just buy one next time after how much work that turned out to be. Go for the official ones though.

Those actually look pretty good, all the parts seem to be there.
They are exactly the same price as the official ones though, so why risk it.
I'd steer clear of anything that hasn't been tested and written up by the community, see this link about clones.

His are actually cheaper amazingly, I'll have to try one of them next. especially as he was one of the original developers of the J-head hotend.

Sounds almost too good to be true. Has anyone used this?

These are commonly refered to as rattm steppers on the irc channel. They are good, but they have short cables.

This looks like a fairly good price:
AliExpress
US$59.95 (roughly NZ$74.00)

Yes, they are the ones I bought last year and will be ordering more shortly for my next build .All good so far, they barely get warm and they are 5% off now! Cables are about 300mm.

I think I might _LIKE_ this AliExpress site....
Take this for example...
Arduino Mega
It'd be hard to beat $US14.24 (NZ$18-ish) for an R3 Mega 2650 clone, and then you realise that's the price for TWO of them and includes free shipping...
I think I'll order half a dozen, just for kicks...

I think it might be only for one, the Chinese are a bit cunning sometimes and I think they are counting the lead as one item and the board as the other - still it is very cheap and I have ordered one lot. So I'll let you know if they send me one or two smiling smiley Now all we need is a cheap RAMPS (typically $37) and some Pololus (best seems to be $10 each).

It might be interesting to pick one of the most "standard" printer designs and then see just how cheaply it can be procured, based on its bill-of-materials. Prusa?

Supplier says, its for only one board and one cable. Still really cheap though!
