How can I calibrate the encoder?

Hello,
I have a RepRapDiscount Smart Controller. How can I calibrate the encoder? The encoder scrolls like crazy through the menus. Sometimes one click scrolls down one items, sometimes three. Also, sometimes when i rotate it down, it scrolls 1-2 items up then it scrolls down. Or when i rotate it up, it scrolls 1-2 items down then it scrolls up. So it is not because of encoder direction. How to solve it?

//
// ENCODER SETTINGS
//
// This option overrides the default number of encoder pulses needed to
// produce one step. Should be increased for high-resolution encoders.
//
//#define ENCODER_PULSES_PER_STEP 4

//
// Use this option to override the number of step signals required to
// move between next/prev menu items.
//
//#define ENCODER_STEPS_PER_MENU_ITEM 1

But it sounds more like a worn out/dodgy encoder

There's a small possibility that adding pullup resistors to the encoder lines will help.
