When trying to use the console in Panel Due 5" I am unable to find the | symbol. Is this correct because if so then why have a console where you cant use extended symbols that are required in reprap.

On my german keyboard the "|" sign is on the same key as "<>". But it looks more like a dotted line.

Why do you need the vertical-bar symbol? It isn't needed in any GCodes, unless you have that character in a filename, SSID or password.

its needed for the |1 command, as in M280 P3 S10 |1

The character you need in that command is not vertical bar, it is upper case letter-i. They look quite similar in some typefaces.
