OK, need someone to give me a Y/N on stepper motor:

and according to wiki (http://reprap.org/wiki/Stepper_motor) this seems to have enough holding torque for the 3D printer kind of work

What I'm doing is, Making Anything That Sort Of Works. I have bits like picAxe and Pi and generally "stuff" around to work with.
I picked up some threaded rods and studding connectors in Wickes yesterday, if I can get to the point where I make those move about a bit and attach boards to them, it will be a huge learning step for me.
How I see myself progressing:
1. Make a motor turn a rod.
2. Make the motor move under computer control.
3. Make 2 motors move in a synchronized way and end up with a flat bed moving according to pattern.
3a. Put a felt tip pen in a gripper on some paper stuck to flat bed, draw a picture. Win nobel prize.
4. Add a third axis to fix tools to do actual jobs, up to limit of current mechanics.
5. Start again knowing what I will understand at that point
So, is the motor I was looking at roughly the sort of thing which might let me do this, or am I miles out?
