Is anyone looking at these pages in the UK ?

This group seem hard to find for new rep-rappers, I didn't find it and was directed by Sebastien.

Anyway I just wanted to know if anyone making a reprap repstrap is in the south west or Wales or Birmingham?

Hi there,

Well, I am looking at this forum!

I'm just starting to research building a reprap, so I am at very early stages of the process. I'm hoping to do it as a winter project this year.

I'm in Poole.

Cool!

Keep in touch, let me know how you get on. I hope to be starting assembly this week, and may get my electronics at some point this week also.

Well, I am looking at these pages.... sometimes winking smiley

I'm in London and recently started printing with a BFB RapMan. However, I still do have that sort of half-way finished Mendel kit, which does have problems on the electronics side... I'm a not exactly an electronics expert, but one way or another I will get it sorted with a little help of some friends.

I also follow the topics of the German group and it is good to know that I am not the only one having trouble with Techzone's electronics kit.

Cheers

Mike

just started looking, in general trying to find a set of plastic pieces for a mendal before I start to do anything else. seems hard to get hold of the plactic parts. was thinking about turning a small engraver into a repstrap?

I'm in Camberley and Portsmouth at the weekends if anyone wants to meet up

Hi geoffd

I live near Portsmouth, Hampshire. I'm a newcomer to RepPap and 'forums.reprap.org' and having a bit of trouble finding my way around or how to make it work at the moment. Seems a bit like everybody speaking at once, each with different ideas. Normal enough I suppose and potentially useful.

My reason for getting involved and, being a mechanical person, I am primarily looking for help with finding, fitting and setting up the electronics and software bits and pieces. So far I have done an awful lot of reading and cross referencing but still can't get a clear picture of exactly what it is I need to fit to my existing CNC setup or how to install some of the software I have found. Nearly all the responses I've had just want to sell me £400 to £800 worth of, I'm not sure what. Maybe I'm just being naive expecting enthusiasm without the commercialism. All I need is friendly help in hand from someone with the know-how.

I've been building a CNC machine for light milling and wire cutting foam, for model making and general light work. It seems to me with careful thought I can include 3D printing into its attributes. No waste.
I have 5 stepper motors, 3 for the usual X,Y.Z axis, and at least 1 I will use for the extruder. All N/C travel limit switches.
Electronically I have an "Arduino mega" board that I deduced I will need, originally purchased for just playing with, and various makings that should be useful somewhere. Obviously I will need and have found 2 sources of stepper motor drivers one a little more expensive than the other but having on-board voltage regulators and that's about it.

What I need now is a clear understanding as to what does what and how it all hooks together and operates from my iMac USB port.
I can already produce *.STL files of a solid CAD designed objects but have no idea how to get that to the Machine.
I know of, understand and could probably write Gcode but this is where it all gets a bit fuzzy. I think there is supposed to be converter software to get from the .STL file to Gcode ? There must also be software to interpret the Gcode and output it to the motors ?

I feel If I can get to understand the latter softwares and where it is used I will be a whole lot closer to the full picture.

Sorry if you didn't want to now this much but I am desperate. Any help I can get is most welcome.

Regards

Skeinforge is an open source package which slices the STL object into sclices and then generates the gcode as required.

IMO it is only really worth looking at once you have something to run your gcode on since much of Skeinforge is specific to your machine.

As for people trying to sell you stuff... I guess that is in your private messages? I personally have not had any such problems and have found the forums pretty helpfull. Even had random strangers send me bits when I was looking for a solution to a problem, so don't let the few 'pushers' put you off.

I am sure that searching the reprap wiki is probably the best place to start, and then questions on the forums when you get stuck.

welcome
