Anyone have a good supplier for small quantities of ABS filament?

Hi Steve,

... for testing with ABS you can reuse the housings of outweared flatbed-scanners or printers - they commonly are made from ABS.

Grind some of the plastic down to powder, then you can solve it to ABS-paste, remelt it to pure ABS-bricks or squeeze melted ABS through a tube for filament ...

To answer your question... New Image plastics. Zach has a supplier who will beat their prices, which aren't bad, iirc.

brendanjerwin mentioned [forums.reprap.org] that McMaster has ABS welding rod. Sure enough, they have two colors in 1, 5, 10 and 15 lb coils. It's 1/8" diameter (3.175mm), which should be OK. I ordered a 1 lb coil (part # 7889A85) to see what it's like.

New Image offers it in proper 3 mm diameter.

How big of a difference will that .175 mm make? I too only got the 1lb size from mcmaster, so I expect I'll need some more sooner than later.

It just depends on whether your extruder barrel was sized exactly for 3 mm or for something a little bigger. Mine won't handle 1/8", but then I make my barrels out of 5/32" hard copper tube stock which has almost precisely a 3 mm ID.

The Mk II polymer pump part of the extruder will eat 1/8" filament quite happily.

Ah. Well, I don't have any metric drill bits so my barrel is slightly bigger already. That would explain why it worked for me. smiling smiley

I've drilled my barrels to 1/8" as well, so the McMaster stuff should work. I figured I'd try 1 lb first and, if that seemed to work well, scale up.

The ABS showed up yesterday. It varies a bit but seems to be about 3.09mm. I haven't run it through the extruder yet. Maybe this weekend.

Any chance of a better colour than off white?

You can order it in any colour you want from New Image. They're always disappointed when I get it in just the natural resin colour. confused smiley

Zach, be sure to blog it on RRRF, I'm monitoring that. I'll be ordering a.s.a.p. once you have it... (along with Arduino + arduino-based kits)

And black please.

abs is in stock: [store.rrrf.org]

i can try, but the RRRF is still in not-much-capital startup mode, so we may have to go through a few cycles of natural-green-black before i can stock all 3 at the same time. i'll talk to my supplier and see what i can do.

Cool. and half the price per pound as mcmaster.

Hi Zach. Glad you have ABS. Guess it will be one popular material winking smiley

By the way: I'd love to have 1/3 Green, 1/3 White, 1/3 Black in the future. As long as it's about the same price/weight and fits in an international box leaving some room for kits/PCBs...
