Ultimaker 12v Cartridge Heater

Could be the best thing for extruder reliability since the hobbed bolt. Anybody know where they get it from?

Has anybody ever had a vitreous enamel resistor fail?

The problem with cartridge heaters is they are too long. That makes the block bigger, which wastes energy and the rising heat heats the insulator.

I don't know what heating resistor you use.
Stoffel15 said that the ones that go bad are GRAY.
The good ones he bought from Farnell.

Erfahrungen kann man leider schlecht weiter geben, die muss man selber machen.

The grey one is silicone coated while the black one is enamel coated. Other vendors have the enamel ones as well, of course.

The vitreous enamel can have a surface temperature of 350C but the silicone ones are only rated for 200C, so it is no wonder they fail.

Cartridge heaters are the correct engineering solution but they are about 10 times more expensive and it is hard to find low voltage short ones.

I'm looking for a simple, completely reliable, aesthetically clean solution. Cartridge heaters are it.
I just want to know where to find this hard to find part (until ultimaker makes them available )

lol - sorry - cannot help you there. I use a vitreous enamel resistor myself.

Post your source here when you do find it - might be others with the same desire.

I've experimented with a small cartridge heater for my hot end design. The advantages are that it does heat up very nicely, the form factor is very compact, and the wiring is nice and neat. Size is not an issue. The one we used is smaller than the vitreous enamel. I may go with that heater for the final design. However, having burned through a couple of them, I can tell you that they are not indestructible. And at 100x the price of a resistor, things can get expensive.

I agree with you In the days of valves and high voltage DC power supplies. I have seen enamel load resistors glowwing red hot yet remaining functional.

There was at least one heater resistor failure at Makerfair in March jmgiacalone had one fail on his E-Maker Huxley.
I'm not sure if it was a ceramic it could have been a Silicon coated resistor im not sure if it was just one that failed.

I've now been using Nichrome elements and enamel resistors heaters now on various extruders.
I prefer the enamel to Nichrome because they are eaiser to buy easier to implement easier to connect to.

Also the Nichrome wire after a while of use loses its cotton insulation..
"while" as in more than a year maybe two years.

As ABS requires over 200C the silicon ones should only be used with/on a PLA extruder I think Adrian uses more PLA than ABS hence the Silicon coated resistors work for him.

Cool.. That is tiny.. the 4mm version looks very intertesting. A 4mm x 12.5mm @ 6-10 ohms 24V would be nice.

But for those of us in the UK they will be expensive with import tax at 20% plus delivery costs..

Are they RHOS certified?

The enamel resistor still remains the proven low cost working option..
