Check out these linear actuators that can be etched right onto a PCB:

I have no idea how they work though, presumably it involves magnets.

Apparently, you can make different patterns by varying the extrusion height and speed.

Fascinating! looked around a bit and found this page:

Lots of stuff there. Search for 'z-drive'. Then you'll see that it works with magnets. At first sight it looks like a regular linear motor. Interesting question is how they got the coils that flat.

Looks like the coils are just spiral tracks on the PCB.

Same principal as a rotary stepper I would think. The gap between the magnets sets the basic step size but you could micro step to get higher resolution.

heh patents pending... yeah good luck patenting that lol. anyway its just a simple linear motor on a pcb. you just make the tracks in the shape of coils. it wont have much force behind it i suspect, compared to conventional linear motors where you have lot more coils. its can be built with reprap ofcourse but i doubt it would have any use in reprap machine due to the lack of power

hmmzzzz.... lets say 4-5 layer pcb-s, stacked like 10 of these on top of eachother.... why not you could technically get smth out of it
lets start building pcb mass drive tongue sticking out smiley

you have to admit, having a little train going around your reprap as it printed would be great. you could also make a really long one and use it to indicate how long the printing job has to go.
