I am a newbe to 3d printing and am wordering if there is a reasonable simulation program. I am using Cura on an Ultimaker Original.

What do you need to simulate, and what do you mean by reasonable?

The path of the extruder to make sure that there are no hidden surfaces in the drawing. I see that there are some very expensive simulators for cad/cam machines. I have found a freebie that does the job called Gcode Simulatot at www.gcodesim.dietzm.de which does the job quite well. It runs on Java. You can speed it up, does about a 2 hour print job in 10-15 minutes.

Might be interesting to run your object through this path simulator,
It would work in reverse as it's subtractive, areas that it can't remove material would indicate potential areas that need support.
