How to resize an .stl
September 16, 2014 10:48AM
I want to print an auger, but am to noob to make my own, but downloaded one on thingiverse, but its hudge. Its like post hole digger size. I want to resize it down to
inch size. Is this possible and how? I have Art of Illusion and FreeCad, but can't figure a way. Anyone can help?
Thanks,
Dave

FreeCad should work fine as should Art of Illusion.
I would recomend using netfabb Basic, "Part - Scale - Enter value - Scale".
Then "Part - Export part - as STL...".

I tried netfabb Basic and it seams like a pretty cool utillity, but when I scale the stl and save it. Then open it in anything else no object appears on
the screen. I will fiddle with it more, the same happens when I resize it with FreeCad. I also noticed that netfabb reports the size as being different than FreeCad.
But I thank you very much, for giving me something to start with. Perhaps my resize attempt is to great and should just try to find a smaller auger. It just sucks that on thingiverse they dont give you size of object. You have to download it then load it in something to find out how big it is.

You can use Slic3r to scale the object in all 3 dimensions by a percentage,
it tells you how large the object is going to be, and it allows export to STL.

This method is limited to X+Y+Z scaling, you can't use it to stretch objects!

If you know OpenSCAD you can import and scale each axis separately.

I usually do my scaling with meshlab.

You can scale an .stl from within KISSlicer and Slic3r. Maybe Skeinforge too; I didn't look and don't remember from memory.

Repetier host also has this ability built in pre slicer and it can be axis independent or locked.

And of course: you can import and scale in OpenScad.
And export as .STL again
