"Painting" software?

I currently have a Chimera head in one of my 3D printers and I was wondering about the full color Diamond hot-end (CMYKW)
I currently do the double mesh split for dual color prints using my CAD software, but I think it would be quite difficult for a full color mixing head printer to have to split a mesh into many separate-color .stl files. Is there a piece of software (preferably free/open source) that allows "painting" the mesh and slicing into multi-material for a mixing head? I am thinking of something like what these guys use in their Rova4D (http://www.ordsolutions.com/)
