Ditto with Fischer Technik. I have only just come across this, as my partner's parents kept all the kits from childhood. It clips together with either integral clips, or key-like pieces. It is like a cross between Lego and Meccano, originally coming out before all the technical Lego, but not needing extra tools as Meccano does.
In the link, the little red things on the crane are those keys

Fishertechnik building kits

I'd have loved some as a child. Hey, I enjoyed it this year!

Have you seen this [objects.reprap.org]? Do they have enough parts for one?

No I hadn't seen this one - I had seen the Lego one, though.
I have asked. There are not enough motor kits (motor kits include the wires etc) in their collection, nor any of the long worm screws, nor the high-tech controllers etc. However, it's an interesting proposal, as there are many of the constructional pieces.....

I have asked that they don't ditch the kits they have! You never know, I may get to "play" with the stuff some more....
