Convert 3D printer to 3D scanner using distancesensors an smart software

Hi,
I think it should be possible to convert any cnc/3D printer to a 3D scanner using just 5 simple distance sensors and some smart software.
One could use one distance sensor to measure first the height of the object at every point, and then use the other sensors to measure the horizontal depth.
This solution would be very cheap(one sensor costs about 1€), but it could take some time for each measurement.
What do you think about this. Would this be possible?
If you do not find any issues with this idea, I will start to write the software.
