Iris - Reprap
July 30, 2010 12:52PM
Hello,

this very morning I woke up and had an idea. I decided to call it "Iris", because the red disk can move like an iris in the eye.

I am aware that it takes 4 steppers instead of 3.

Nice model

But it Looks like you have no resolution ? Just a 1/4 turn of the stepper? and the red bed is going to put sideways pressure on you'r motors I don't think that's not going to work.

Thx.

It was just a first sketch of the idea. It needs to be elaborated further. That's right.

For the frame I am thinking about using a part of a drainpipe. Stable and cheap. Hence the rings.

You can always use gear boxes to up the resolution and reverse the steppers to relieve the pressure.

Could such be 3D-printed?

... the short answer: - yes ...

But you have to select the materials and/or mix with embedded hard bits, or the pins will wear out really fast ...

Yes, it has. I've been searching like a madman for 15 minutes for it and cannot find it. Giles Bathgate had a blog post about it somewhere and there was some IRC chatter a while back.

Do you mean his comment here?

That was milled, not printed.
