Hi Everyone
October 14, 2012 11:45PM
Glad to be a part of the community- hello to anyone reading.
Lately I've been learning all I can about 3D printing and RepRaps, and am extremely anxious to get started.
My main goal is to build a RepRap machine capable of producing high quality/low surface roughness prints.

I am impressed by the high quality prints of machines like Cubify
Especially the smoothness of its prints:
Also, I am interested in the Replicator 2 by MakerBot
And the intricate prints it can produce:

But I am NOT interested in the proprietary aspects of both machines, or the price. I want the freedom that a homemade RepRap offers (i.e. no proprietary cartridges, etc.), but also want a high quality print. In addition, I am hoping to keep the startup costs as low as possible.
I assume that a well made Prusa Mendel (v.2) could offer the same quality as the before mentioned machines, but I am not sure. Most videos I find on Prusas are focused on production speed, and not as much on quality. My first questions to you all are;
1) Can a Prusa Mendel produce the kind of prints I am hoping to achieve?
2) If so, could such a Prusa be made for $1,200 or less?
3) If not, what type of RepRap machine would you recommend?

I know many of you are in a constant quest to improve your machines, and I am hoping to learn from your experience.
Thank you for reading.

All the best,
Riff Raff

Welcome !

Next time maybe consider posting in the general forum for general question, here is for people wanting a part printed.

Short answers

1) Can a Prusa Mendel produce the kind of prints I am hoping to achieve?
Yes.

2) If so, could such a Prusa be made for $1,200 or less?
Yes, you can probably build 2 or 3 prusas with that budget.

3) If not, what type of RepRap machine would you recommend?
I'd recommend a stiffer frame than the Prusa V2, so you can print somewhat faster.
Look around for Prism, Mendelmax, Mendel90, and maybe Prusa V3, and so many more smiling smiley

Most of my technical comments should be correct, but is THIS one ?
Anyway, as a rule of thumb, always double check what people write.

Thanks for the response!
Sorry about posting in the wrong area, I actually thought I was in the "general" area when I first posted.
After I realized my mistake I reposted in the correct forum.
I will take a look into all of the Repraps you are recommending- thank you so much for the info.
It seems that a solid/rigid machine is vital for high quality prints, I am tempted to just build an extra rigid exo-skeletin of sorts around the machine after I start... maybe even bolt the whole thing to the floor. Is there such a thing as too rigid when it comes to a reprap? Do you print parts for all of the machines you recommend?
If so, how much does a typical set or printed parts cost through you?
Thanks again for your time and help.

Yes, the more rigid the better, but I would recommend against bolting your machine down to the surface it lays on, it would transmit vibrations (and noise) around.

I'm not making parts on a regular basis, but I can make parts for any of those machines. You'd be better try and locate someone near you first then (I'm French).

As a side note, if you don't have a good reason for writing in huge coloured letters - like a visual inability or something like that - could you please not do so ? It's quite disturbing for my eyes smiling smiley
