Wanted: J-Head Hot End in USA

Is anyone selling a J-Head style (this is the current state of the art, right?) hot end in the US?

thingfarm sells them in the EU but I was hoping to find a local less expensive supplier. (though, I still want metric. I metricized my workshop a while ago to make collaboration easier)

While I am not sure what would be considered the current "state of the art" in open source hot-end design, I can supply you with a J-Head nozzle.

I am cautiously optimistic about the design as it successfully prints with both ABS and PLA. (Printing with PLA is tricky and may work better if the experimental heat-sink works.) However, the nozzle has not been around for long enough to determine it's long-term reliability. I do know that it certainly works and has successfully been used to print a couple of sets of Prusa Mendel parts in ABS.

Please note that I do not have a 3d printer. I have a machine shop and was contacted back around February or March and asked to help build a new hot-end design and this is it.

As far as the parts being metric, the main part to worry about is that the PEEK insulator fits in the 16mm socket. Since 16mm is only about 0.005 of an inch greater than 5/8", that isn't a problem. The J-Head Nozzle threads are 3/8-24 primarily because 3/8-24 was the closest size available that would both do the job and would be easy to get taps and dies for.


I have priced the parts out as follows:

Brass J-Head Nozzle: $25.00

PEEK Insulator (36.5mm version): $10.00
or
PEEK Insulator (50mm version): $12.50

PTFE Liner (with taper): $1.50

Heater Resistor: $1.00
Thermistor: $3.00

Support Washer: $0.50

Domestic Shipping/Handling: $1.75

At the present time, the heat sink is pretty experimental and should probably be only used with the long PEEK insulator. At this time, I am not setup to produce the heat sinks in any quantity and the heat sink is completely untested. If the heat sink is successful, I'll make the necessary tooling and fixtures in order to produce the heat sink for a reasonable price.

I am planning on building a prusa model, it looks like I will want the 36.5mm PEEK insulator then, is that correct?

I have a working cupcake makerbot, so am okay experimenting with the state of the art with my next build which is why I wanted to try out the J-head. It also just seems very elegant to me compared to some of the other designs out there.

The 36.5mm PEEK insulator should work anywhere the Geared Extruder Nozzle will work as the distance from the end of the thermal barrier to the shoulder for the optional support washer is the same as the distance from the end of the Geared Extruder Nozzle thermal barrier to it's support block.

What size of orifice would you like drilled in the nozzle? The recommended starting size is usually considered to be 0.50mm.

John, did you end up having success with the new hot end? I have been looking all over for a J-Head nozzle in the US.

Thanks for the reply! Too bad they dont sell the individual pieces of the extruder. I already have a TON of resistors, thermisters, and tubing. Though, once my extruder needs replacing, I now know where to go!

Hello Brian, I would like to get one of your MKIV-B Hot-Ends shown on the Rep-Rap-USA site. I'm looking to use it in a Mendel (not Prusa) with a Wades extruder. It looks like I need the 50mm nozzle holder for that but am not sure how to specify between the 36.5mm and 50mm lengths on the web store.
