Firmware for Dual X / Y Gantries? - 9 years ago
I have seen the MarlinX2 firmware but I am a little lost on how exactly it works. I would like to be able to have a pair of gantries independently controlled on X and Y, each with an extruder but sharing the same Z axis. This would allow printing of two different objects at the same time. Each extruder would build the layer for a given object and when both finished, the layers would change inby vulcanrd - General

Is there a way that a relay can be triggered only when the stepper driver is moving in a positive direction, ie can I turn on a fan only when the extruder is extruding and turn it off when its retracting?by vulcanrd - General

I hadn't seen any real reviews on this so I thought I would do a quick one as I had received my Kickstarter reward and have had some time to play with it. I know that the printer is not a true RepRap but it is open-source and the components in the kit could be used for other things *hint hint* It was delivered about 2 months later than expected but I think that is the norm for Kickstarter hahaby vulcanrd - General

Wow that's a long URL. Please note I have not used the motors nor seen them in person but they are used with the TI DRV8825 apparently with good results although they are not super powerful (like 4.5 times a good NEMA 17). Alternatively what Nicholas said about running two motors on the same axis should work.by vulcanrd - General

Again reading comprehension is apparently not your strong suit. There is only one (1) comment in all of 2014, not 'comments' as you stated. There are two (2) other (that is OTHER than Ronny Ager-Wick who is mentioned above) people that commented in 2013 about a missing extruder. One that was missing a hobbed bolt which means they got their extruder just that it was missing a part or he receivedby vulcanrd - General

Just make sure that the NEMA 23s don't require a lot more amperage than the Pololus can output . The TI DRV8825s are a better choice for running bigger motors and only cost like $1 more.by vulcanrd - General

@tjb1 ...your reading comprehension needs a little adjusting it looks like there are a grand total of 3 people in the year 2013 that posted about not receiving theirs. Perhaps it was an oversight on their part or the units were shipped and lost in the mail. I have been following it pretty closely on their KS. They are behind on shipments as most KS projects are. Some people are pretty pissed about that but it is the nature of the beast. If you weed through the comments and ignore the whining masses about shipment delays, the majority of people that got theirs say its really great for the price. While I have always had good results with Qubd stuff I know some people have problems. They posted this to their Kickstarter and I was blown away as I have never been able to do that with any of my 3 printers (solidoodle, mendel and printrbot lc). I would be really interested in seeing the video of the SIMO stages moving back and forth @ 300mm/s @10k accel with a 4 kilo brick on them. I searched and couldn't find any of your vids with any speeds higher than 180mm/s and certainly not with a 4 kilo brick on them.by vulcanrd - General

Its a preorder for the seconb run of them so you would have to wait a bit, but its cheap and should be able to reach those temperatures with the cartridge heater option with no problems.by vulcanrd - General

Really Fast Heating of the Nozzle...? - 13 years ago
I have been experimenting with a heater cartridge to heat up my nozzle and I have noticed that it heats up REALLY fast. It will overshoot my target temperature by 30+ degrees and then eventually settle back down and be constant. While it is awesome that the heater cartridge can generate that much heat that quickly, my thermistor doesn't seem to react quickly enough. Is there a setting in the fby vulcanrd - General

Looking at what they said earlier, they were saying that a single one of their extruders is lighter and smaller not a dual. I'm not saying that yours won't be lighter but I don't think they said theirs was lighter than yours either, as they don't have one for comparison. I would assume most people would get a single extruder from them anyways.by vulcanrd - General

You're right I just reread what he said that Kickstarter in general has a horrible track record not necessarily them in particular. If what they say is true about it weighing less and taking up less space (in single form) than a Wade's / J-head that a lot of people are running successfully...how can you say its too much mass for the Prusa frame?by vulcanrd - General

What are the little electrical female crimp terminals called and where can I order them. They have been included in lots of stuff that I have bought that is reprap related. I thought they were Molex kk 0.1" but there are so many different kinds of them I am at a loss. Also what/where to get the black plastic housings to insert the female crimp pins into? I understand that the thermistors register voltage to give temperature readings to the electronics. I understand that if the temperatures for extrusion or bed temps changed dynamically during a print why this would be advantageous. Can't Upload Firmware to RAMPS - 14 years ago
I have a preassembled RAMPS 1.4 from Ultimachine and have been unable to connect and upload anything successfully. The green LED is on the Arduino board only...there are no other LED's on. I have the board Mega 2560 and COM3 specced in the Arduino software. I can compile the Marlin firmware (other ones I tried had errors). There are a 3 main different types of heating elements for the extruder that I am seeing are used frequently. Cartridge Heater - ala Makerbot Resistor Heater - Hotends.com etc. Nichrome Wire - Makergear etc. What is your preference for a heating element and why?by vulcanrd - General

I understand what you are saying completely. While the Prusa mendel may be the inspiration for the project, the similarities would be limited to having 3 axis of movement and extruding plastic so it really isn't a derivative work. I do not expect some other company to come in and pay millions for an idea, but I do think that a novel way of doing something can be monetized on a small scale and sby vulcanrd - General

We have begun working on our own, improved version of an inexpensive 3D printer, fairly distantly based on the Prusa Mendel but having almost exclusively unique parts. When we are done with it (who knows when that may be!) we would like to release it to the community to modify, make and fiddle with for personal use. The whole idea of an open source 3D printer is very exciting to me and I have decided to build one. It seems that some of the more commercial offerings like the Ultimaker have solved some inherent 'problems' with the base design to improve overall machine quality at the expense of additional cost.
