OK, Hi guys, a newbie to a lot of this stuff, and a complex history behind this question. For lots of reasons best left out of this post to save boring the hell out of the readership, a number of years ago, I got a lot of hardware to allow us to build a Delta Pi, and the project stalled and never got started. Now, with Covid changes, and a lot more time on my hands, I'm wanting to get back intby Irish_Steve - General

Already been done, Delta Pi, is possibly what you are looking for, and depending on where you are, there are people out there already printing parts for it.by Irish_Steve - Developers
QuoteSome advice, drop out of college. You're not going to learn anything useful about 3d printing there. If you wanna start a business, just do it. Don't wait around for a fancy piece of paper to start doing what you wanna do. Sorry, that has to be the worst possible advice. There was a time when the piece of paper was a nice to have, but experience and ability was worth more. Now, with manyby Irish_Steve - General
Very easy indeed if you use a smoke detector that's designed to work with an alarm panel, 4 wires, +12 and ground, the other 2 are a normally closed switch that will go open on alarm activation. While I don't know the firmware structure at all yet, it can't be more than a few lines in the right place to check, detect and branch accordingly, and the alarm will be making enough noise to raise the dby Irish_Steve - Safety & Best Practices
QuoteTheTechnicalNoob QuoteIrish_Steve 120 amps would be enough to arc weld with if I want to Please tell me you're using fuses! At this stage, it's not wired up yet, but fuses will be the minimum, more likely I will put some fast acting circuit breakers in the loop as well, given the power that these things can throw out, I know they have a lot of protection in the PSU, but there's no pointby Irish_Steve - Delta Machines
Mike, An update for you, There's another one coming up soon in Ireland, I've got pretty much all of the parts now, the only thing left to do is to build it, and that's going to happen just as soon as I get my garage back to sanity, I want the floor space so that I don't keep falling over the thing. My plan for the bed is to use a piece of heavy aluminium plate, with a heat barrier on top of it,by Irish_Steve - Delta Machines

There is another factor to be remembered here, which is that the Arduino is not trying to execute a whole operating system, with possibly a mountain of other (spurious to Reprap) operations that can require significant resources and time to execute, and some of the reprap functions are time critical. If the operation is downloaded to a dedicated processor, then that processor has no reason to carby Irish_Steve - General
Sanjay, Thanks for the comments, I've been working on things theoretically, and discovering a mountain of information on a regular basis. I've had long experience with microswitches, and basically don't trust them for accurate repeatability to the levels we are trying to aspire to, but I reckon it won't be too hard to use an optical switch, which will be less sensitive to variance Looking forwaby Irish_Steve - General

Been reading up wherever possible, starting a build shortly of a Delta Pi, using Ramps 1.4 to control things, and I am wondering if it's possible to have a control signal for a solenoid that will provide a brake for the filament supply, the solenoid to be pulled when the extruder is driving positively, the intention being to prevent a spool over run when the extruder stops, so that the filament dby Irish_Steve - RAMPS Electronics
Been following this thread with interest, and I am coming at this from a position of being very new to 3D, but a good overall background in some of the areas that are involved, so the suggestion I will throw into the pot is that a possible way to get the information would be to find a way of mounting a strain gauge between the hot end and the extruder, or bowden tube end. This would sense the preby Irish_Steve - General
Strangely enough, as you will see from my post count, I too am relatively new here, and joined because there are areas of this site that appeared to offer information and assistance with the sort of things I am planning to get involved with. I too have posted questions about a number of areas related to 3D printing, having spent some time researching reading and analysing before I joined, and thby Irish_Steve - General
QuoteIn addition, we use spectra fishing line which produces higher resolution prints than using belts. Can I ask another newbie question here, while I can see that belts may wear, and have a bit of play in the engagement of the teeth, why is fishing line going to produce higher resolution prints, from what I can see of it, the resolution will be down to the size of the belt, the slack or otherwby Irish_Steve - Delta Machines
Thanks for the extra comments, they indeed help, and I will be playing with this very soon, to get it working well will be a bonus. What's become very clear is that there is a lot more to the Delta than had first been anticipated. The version I am going to try and get working is a variant of the Rostock, the Pi, as the bearing towers are a lot cheaper to get the parts for, but should be every biby Irish_Steve - Delta Machines
Sanjay, Thinking aloud, and decided to run this by you. My hotend kit arrived on Friday, many thanks, and I like the quality a lot, even before I start to use it. My plan is to use it in a Delta Pi, so there are bed position and calibration issues, so I am going to throw a thought your way to see if it's possible or desirable. All sorts of fancy probes are being used to sense the bed positionby Irish_Steve - General
I will look forward to trying this out, my plan, rightly or wrongly, will be to have a metallic bed base, and a probe ( A fixed pin with a connection back to the Ramps board) on the moving platform that will be a substitue for the hot end, and then I can probe to my heart's content across the surface of the print area, get it aligned correctly, and then get the appropriate correction factors fromby Irish_Steve - Delta Machines
OK, QuoteI've seen very little mention of the printer I am going to be making soon, the Delta Pi, very similar in some respects to the Rostock, but using lower cost materials, primarily in the area of the masts, and from what I have seen of the design, it should be possible to upscale without too much pain. How big would you like it? I think that is answering your question that you raised initby Irish_Steve - General

The SD is a nice to have rather than a must have, but as it's on the back of the LCD display card, it's there anyway. The LCD means that you can directly drive the printer without having to rely on the computer to interpret what you want the printer to do, and when setting up, or calibrating, or faultfinding, being able to directly see and control what's going on, or possibly not going on is a fby Irish_Steve - General
Mine are still in transit to me, so I've not had chance to "play" yet, I got my information from this thread on the helicopter groups forum, which seems to cover pretty much most of the information you will need. I also got for about £7 the board from a scrapped server that has the connector that mates to the PSU, so my plan is to butcher the board rather than the PSU, which will open up usinby Irish_Steve - General
It was working for me a few days ago, but there were some issues with code not working correctly, so it's possible that they've taken it down short term to fix the issues, even some of the basics like registering to use the site were not working correctly, They did tell me in E-mail that the office in Poland was moving premises, which might cause a bit of a delay, I have just logged on from heby Irish_Steve - General
Both the previous posts are valid, the display and SD capability will make it a LOT easier to do things on the printer without having a computer locked into the scenario, The power supply should not be dismissed, the printer needs power too, and that can be significant. A good idea for these things could well be to pick up a used server power supply from E-bay, I've just picked up 2 that can proby Irish_Steve - General
A newbie here, so I can see both sides of this coin. The spam I have seen (and reported in some cases) seems to be fairly directed. What I don't understand is why we're not using a system where a user name is blocked rather than being deleted, the same very specific name has been used on several days to post spam, if it was blocked, so not reusable for a while, that in itself would provide a goodby Irish_Steve - General
Thanks for the links, especially the one that has the code on it, clearly, the information is out there, but not perhaps as clearly documented as it might be, but that's not a complete surprise, these sorts of fixes tend to get made when up to one's backside in alligators, and documenting how the swamp was being drained becomes a distraction that then gets forgotten in the heat of the moment. That looked very agricutural to me, there was significant movement in the bed when contact was made, and it was movement that would seem to put accuracy at risk. Not sure I'd be too comfortable driving the head into the bed with that degree of force, it only has to touch as far as I can see.but that is a different design, so maybe it's OK.by Irish_Steve - Developers
