I thought there were a great deal of people/companies selling pre-built prusas and other open designs? Why does a "it just works" printer need to be closed and produced by one company to be commercially viable?by Kt - General
Is the 167.50$ cost as Apple sees it (they buy the components like the screen, ICs from other companies which make their profit too). Or is 167.50$ the total cost of materials and labor for all components before any profits are made? Probably the former. There is a difference between the two.by Kt - General
Answer me this about global capitalism, if you support it. Tell me why a Chinese person is not worth less than a person from a richer society like US or Europe. Same hour of work producing the same item with less pay, their time is worth less therefore they are worth less. If you subscribe to this system you acknowledge this belief every day in the products you buy.by Kt - General
Just because something doesn't always work out in a market economy does NOT make it not viable as a product, service, device, whatever. A market economy is not for everything and not everything is part of a market economy, one example: You don't see too many parents putting their children up for adoption because child rearing is not profitable. Likewise you don't see too many friendships or relatby Kt - General

Has anyone made progress on making a Thingiverse alternative?by Kt - General
If you're talking about putting the self-replicating means of production on everyone's desk don't be surprised when some anti-capitalists show up. ;-) The Silence Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > This is a forum about 3D Printing not politics and > bickering go somewhere else if you want to do > that. Hurray! Let's throw around words like socialism, communism, and capitalism without knowing what these words actually mean, or actually,... I donno, picking up a book on the subject, or having any understanding of class divisions or the means of production. Wheeeee!!! If socialism is like the Borg what is the federation? You know the federation was a (mostly) communist society right? Ironically thby Kt - General
QuoteIdolcrasher Do you feel that MakerBot Industries has supported you as a hobbyist, and if so, how? I have used Thingiverse a couple times, but that will soon be replaced. A website to post some stl files on is not rocket surgery or anything. Idolcrasher, I have to agree with your analysis of Bre's blog posting. He just doesn't seem to get the point of why people are angry, why people wouldby Kt - General
QuoteBre Pettis For the Replicator 2, we will not share the way the physical machine is designed or our GUI because we don’t think carbon-copy cloning is acceptable and carbon-copy clones undermine our ability to pay people to do development. Will protecting the design and the GUI stop the clones? Probably not for very long, but it allows us to clearly speak one of the unspoken rules of open sourby Kt - General
Don't panic, but MBI is absolutely a threat to the future of completely open source 3D printing becoming mainstream. No, the more evolved or efficient product is not the one that will necessary succeed, it's more likely to be the one that has the most 21st century marketing bullshit. We don't live in a rational world where the "consumers" logically think about the merits of various 3D printers,by Kt - General
Thing is nothing Thingiverse is doing can't be replicated and run by the community. It's just there hasn't been a motivation before, now there is. I expect to see several viable Thingiverse alternatives within the next few weeks, with less restrictive TOS, so the choice will be clear. The fact that it's "free" doesn't make up for a horrid TOS, I'm sure the community can come up with the 50-100USDby Kt - General
There is no reason a thingiverse alternative would need to host any user created files, it could have all the social and media aspects of thingiverse, but only host a torrent to download the user created files. Using torrents, needing to generate an absurd TOS would be less of a concern because the thingiverse alternative never touches the files.by Kt - General

Generic Arduino or Arduino Clone are nicer words to use IMO. Most of the generic Arduinos don't call themselves Arduino outright. (Usually "Arduino Compatible") If there is no Arduino logo on the PCB mask it's generic and not made in Italy, big deal. Better to err on the side of caution and not call oshw counterfeit, due to the negative connotations that brings.by Kt - General
