I recently switched to Sli3r for my MendelMax and Pronterface integration. It prints better and faster than skeinforge except that it does this long countdown before a print starts and that is making all the filament ooze out of the extruder prior to print start. How can I fix this?by tivkin - General
I actually switched to Slic3r yesterday and have not had the issue since.by tivkin - General
I'm using Marlin, Pronterface, Skeinforge and the print jobs are off because the printer is retracting filament when it gets to the start of the print. It makes half the first layer off. Where do I correct this?by tivkin - General
I had a blast building my MendMax 1.5. Here is my site for the build. GeoTrinketby tivkin - General
Thanks all for the advice. I've run the calibration tests a number of times and have the correct amount of filament feed now. I also changed the settings in Skeinforge to correct the extruder diameter. Prints are much better. New Android Print I still think I can improve the print 10-15% if I can tweak the settings to smooth out the flow of filament a little more. Skeinforge has a ton of settingby tivkin - General
Thanks to all the help from this forum, I have almost finished dialing in my Mendel. I have the correct extrusion length, but here is a print that I'm testing thin walls. The Z axis is lifting .44 before it starts printing and that is messing up the first layer. Where can I tweak this so that it doesn't lift? \Mendel_Reprap\stl\0.5mm-thin-wall_export.gcode It took 51 seconds to export the filby tivkin - General
I'm using Marlin, Pronterface and Skeinforge. I have a J-Head Mark IV, which I've learned is a .35 diameter. I took all the defaults for initial install and now I'm looking for where I change the nozzle diameter?by tivkin - General
I'm getting curly layers. It looks like the swirl on the top of a Hostess Cupcake on the edge of the print. What setting should I tweak to smooth out the extrusion?by tivkin - General
Update: Noob error. I had the extruder motor bolt to tight and it was binding. Now dialing in the configuration.h file.by tivkin - General
Here is the section of my config file that I'm trying to dial in. How do you test/tweak this? My hotend: J-Head Mk IV-B Hot End for 3mm filament // default settings #define DEFAULT_AXIS_STEPS_PER_UNIT {81.4830, 81.4830, 2015.7480, 759.9017} // per //#define DEFAULT_AXIS_STEPS_PER_UNIT {78.7402,78.7402,200.0*8/3,760*1.1} // default steps per unit for ultimaker //#define axis_steps_per_unitby tivkin - General
I am having issues with the extruder stepper motor. It is not feeding the filament smoothly. The motor chatters on small movements and I have to feed the filament in to get it to extrude. I've played with the tension bolts for the feeder but I'm not sure what is going on. Here is a pic of the issue...Poor Androidby tivkin - General
Printing with ABS, heated end @ 235, bed @110. It looked like I was getting a even amount of extrude. I don't have a fan on the heat end.by tivkin - General
I'm dialing in my Rerap Mendel. I'm running Marlin with the base config (MB=33). My first print started out ok, but on the 3rd or 4th layer it all balled up on the heat end. What needs tweaked? stepper motor(s), configuration.h or both? Suggestions appreciated.by tivkin - General
I have bed set as Y, the cross member set as X, is that correct? Also, the Y Home in Pronterface sends the bed away from the endstop. Can I change this in software? I'm trying to set the 0 point to Y back and X left. And finally, in pronterface it looks like I can + the steps, but only - the same number of stepsby tivkin - General
I'm not doing this right. The pins for the board are Red | Black | Blue, and the red is on the + of the board. The switch is NO | NC | C. I put the volt meter on Rx 1K and the probes n the NO and C it jumps to 1 OHM. I close the switch and the meter goes to 0. I pin the line to the board ( red | blue) and retest. The probes go to 1 OHM but when I close the switch it goes back to 2, not shuttingby tivkin - General
That is the issue. When I remove the endstops from the RAMPS board it connects fine. I will have to rewire the endstops. Thanks!by tivkin - General
I have the Arduino and Pronterface hardware installed, I'm trying to setup the printer and the COM2 goes offline everytime the printer stops on one of the endstops. error: Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45) What am I missing? Thanksby tivkin - General
The answer is: 2 left pos, 2 middle (sm blk) therm, 2 right neg. or reverse, either way the left 2 and right 2 are 1 polarity. I had it cross wired.by tivkin - General
The heated bed pad shipped with my printer has 6 wires. 2 for therm, and 2 pos and 2 neg. I checked each set of pos/neg with the voltage regulator, making sure that I got a reading from each set of leads. I put 1 pos and 1 neg into RAMPS (D8 heated bed) and 1 pos and 1 neg into power supply. When I plug in the power supply it will not start. If I remove the pos/neg from the power supply and plugby tivkin - General
How close does the the thermostat element need to be to the heat end? I saw an online video showing it attached with shrink wrap/tape where the hot end element is soldered to the wire. I copied that, but wanted to make sure. Here is a pic of how I assembled it;by tivkin - General Mendel Topics
Having just placed the self tapping screws in the top of the frame this weekend on my MendelMax 1.5 I will forward that this is done because you tightening these screws blind and are not seen after installed. You could always tap the extrusion ends and use a thin head bolt. In fact I had to get a star bolt hex set (from Advance Auto $6.49) that had a long, thin shaft to make in thru the hole inby tivkin - General Mendel Topics

I've found all the software, and downloaded some .stl files to review, but am still not connecting the dots on some things for 3d printing. My printer comes in this week and I've been researching the printing process while waiting and have a couple questions. a) how does the printer work when you have a void area, like the lip on a box for both sides? or a coin with a lip?
