Just thinking aloud... Local Motors bus can be 3D printed in 10 hours and assembled in 1 hour accourding to the article above. By eliminating the need for costly public transport infrastructure - underground & overground trains, bus drivers & stops - could it: (1) reduce the added value of existing city centre locations? (2) enable the much more lower cost creation of new cities? Thoby Senake - General
Hi Andrew, We're not injection moulding on purpose to allow our machine to evolve - so our margins aren't very high. The machine is currently just PLA focused, because that's what doesn't warp so much on big prints. Our Fair Source approach is an extension of the bounties scheme that doesn't seem to have taken off in a big way. Most of the open source people that I have spoken too say that theby Senake - Crowdfunding Projects Announcements
Hi All, We have just launched our next generation 3D printing and assembly machine on Kickstarter - see . The team and I do very much believe in open source, but are very aware of it's flaws in getting a fair return for the efforts of value creators - see my discussion here - . For this reason, in addition to the printer, as part of the campaign, we have pitched 'Fair Source'. This uses a systby Senake - Crowdfunding Projects Announcements
Emmanuel & the Foldrap community, Please find a picture of my recently built Foldarap 2 above/attached. @jb92563, As per my Compopoly approach, to maximise collaboration without losing the motivation of competition, the bounty could be split based on the value of each incremental innovation. Approved development expenses should probably be paid out of the bounty first before the rest is split up between the innovators. @bobc & @tramflug Well done for setting this up. I second cope413's assessment of the Rostock in terms of volume for the money and visual appeal. Richrap's machine does look amazing too though with better self replicability - more printed parts, fishing line instead of belts and so on. The prints look great too. It's my first build (nearly finished), sometimes very frustrating, but invaluably educational.by Senake - General
Might it be a good idea to schedule a Webex (or free open source equivalent) to thrash around a few ideas on screen - maybe sometime on an upcoming weekend or night? I would especially love to see a demo or walk through of this functionality: Quotenophead You get a wiki with each Github project if you want to have pictures, etc. Also if your project contains pictures, for example the Mendel90 hby Senake - General
QuoteIquizzle According to KS, there should be zero expectation of return on investment. Problematically, KS has no system of accountability... This is why on the RepRap site, we should encourage, nurture and enable the purchase of incrementally innovated 3D printers, components and related solutions (eg. Raw material producing aquaponics, PLA production units, filament extruders and the like).by Senake - General
QuoteTraumflug The basic idea is: if you found an issue with, let's say, a flaw in the design of the Sanguinololu, open a bounty... In my opinion, the RepRap wiki seems to be quite well structured at a top level, but adding to it is - only marginally - more of an chore than just posting something in the general forum. I am very guilty of this too with my inadequately researched post on whether aby Senake - General

Not sure how practical it is, but couldn't the RepRap community shop look at selling off the printer components - motors, belts and pulleys - if they could somehow be extracted, sorted, tested and shipped to buyers?by Senake - General
Joseph, Have you tried looking on GitHub to open up and take a print off the STL files? The Rostock is open source. You might also want to try posting this request on the SeeMeCNC forums. Regards Senakeby Senake - General

I recall that back in 2012, Kickstarter came under fire from one of the most widely read gadget web sites because of non delivery, but I was under the impression that they had taken that to heart and tightened up what could be offered and expected especially with regard to hardware projects - see this link: http://www.kickstarter.com/blog/kickstarter-is-not-a-store. If you want to abandon Open Source, that is fine, there are plenty of IP protection mechanisms granted by governments that enable you do that. Tramflug & iquizzle, For the sake of clarity, I wanted to point out that I am not advocating crowd funding for innovator controlled developments. I am advocating crowd vetting and development of worthy innovators ideas by an interested expert community (eg. RepRap for 3D printers). Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the goals of the community and the open source movement - to be - in this order: (1) To create a more giving, less taking environment... One way to get this started whilst waiting for bounty source to get involved would be to try and get some quantification of what people would like a 3D printer to do - and I don't just mean people on the RepRap wiki and forums.
