I am running a 12v and have it set for 12.5v power source. Ramps 1.4 . Ord bot printer.by Janski - General
Any help greatly appreciated as I have been dealing with this problem for months I have a compression spring Extruder which I have made on my own from aluminum. Using regular gear and NEMA17 motor. Are these motors strong enough ? Mine keeps skipping- same way when you hold the rotating gear as the motor is moving it starts to skipp . I ensure there is as little resistance on the idler andby Janski - General
have you ever ran into the Ramp1.4 overheating? I have a 12v source feeding 12.48V force. Should i lower it back to 12? Great info on this vine btw.! - Janskiby Janski - Controllers
main question: is 12.48v output too much? if so should i lower it back to 12V even?by Janski - Controllers
Question: I have a 12v power source which is currently feeding 12.48v into the board. is this the reason my board is overheating? Resulting in: steppermotors moving in unusual way, extruder motor + gear clicking(making tick tick tick sound) and not spinning thus not extruding. Please advise if you have ever had: board overheating, extruder clogging/motors jamming Sincerely, Janskiby Janski - Controllers
Bingo Madmike! Went through the connections and found a slipped heat shrink that exposed the wires and caused a short. This taught me that lost COM can be due to bad connection. Thank you all for the input -Janskiby Janski - Mechanics
It certainly looks like heat could be the factor. After checking up on the specs for Nema 17 motors. I found Temperature Rise: 80°C Max. the motor was definately above 80C. Next step switch out the motors and deploy direct fan with heatsinks.by Janski - Mechanics
the Heat is generated by the extruder heater block. the extruder fan was not mounted properly and it looks like the stepper motor now broke. when i try to activate it, the motor jiggles back and forth but not turns. Has anyone fried their stepper motor due to high heat?by Janski - Mechanics
Main reason i ask is because the Nema 17 motor I am using for a standard MKB extruder and the motor starts skipping in one position without turning. This happens when the heat from the extruder travels up the ceramic block and spreads to the motor. I have 2 extra 40 mm fans looking to use it directly at the block and the gear / nema 17 plane. Hope this makes sense - Janskiby Janski - Mechanics
Can we speak to Heat and the effect it has on the stepper motors. Since the Extrusion Method requires a motor and the proximity causes the heat to spread to the motor, what methods do you guys use to control the temperature. besides bowden extrusion, or liquid cooling. any thoughts? Hey Reprappers, While making my 2nd Ord bot, using Ramps 1.4, I have encountered an issue: "The printer seems to freeze and lose connection to COM3 about 43 seconds before print ends." Has anyone encountered this type of an issue? I switched USB cables and USB ports. Thought perhaps the connection on the USB port on ramps 1.4 was broken. Not sure through. Please adviseby Janski - Controllers
Should I re install Arduino on PC? is this a driver issue?by Janski - RAMPS Electronics

Attached is the pic of the solder job. So to answer my question: This bed is drawing 11.80V and there is nothing I can do about it because of the hardware. Let me know if I am thinking in the right directionby Janski - Controllers
Thank you for your answer. I replied above. Please advise if you see anything wrong in my process. - Janskiby Janski - Controllers
Thank you for the reply. I see what you mean. When I test the 16 gauge wires by connecting to D8 and testing the wire tips with multimeter , at first I get the 12.48 V. Then When I solder the bed, with + to 1 and - to 2 and 3 terminals, I get the 11.78-11.50 Vs. Noobman below mentioned how the currents vary. But could this mean I am not soldering properly. I use flux, tin the wires and terminalby Janski - Controllers
PS: using 16 gauge wire for the bed.Do i go for 14? the heater extruder runs on 18 gauge so I would not think that would make a difference in bed.by Janski - Controllers
My Power source reads 12.48 V from the power source and the D8 slot in Ramps 1.4. However, when I check the Heat Bed terminals they only read 11.82 V. This is resulting in slow heat-up-times and power. Any quick fix? do i need to rewire? Cheers! -Janskiby Janski - Controllers
QuoteCefiar Are the stepper drivers set for 1/16th microsteps (this is what the jumper settings are for? Those numbers in Marlin are fairly specific for fairly standard setups for drivers set up for 1/16th microstep. They will be different if you're using 1/8th microstep or 1/32nd microstep jumper setting for your drivers. . That is what I am having hard time understanding: By "drivers set forby Janski - Controllers
Dear Cefiar, attached is the pic of the driver: The board came with the A4988 drivers: ( 4988ET, A1347, 485L on the microprocessor ).. - assuming it is the 1/16 then. Belt used: MXL Timing Belts – .080" or 2.03 mm Pitch The motors I am using are Nema 17: KL17H248-15-4A Lot No. 2013.04.19 As per my current understanding : the stepper motor does 360degree / turn. There are 200 steps . 360/200by Janski - Controllers
Ps: the pulley has 20 teeth, does that play any part ?by Janski - Controllers
My motors are Nema 17 /1.8 deg/ 2.5 belts How about default set steps per unit in marlin? Mine is set for 78.7402 for x and y axes. On the first build the units worked but on this particular one when i leave it at 78.7402 the motors make the noise and do not make a revolution. When i 1/2 that at set at 39.... For x and y , it starts to look more like proper revolution. I am using the same beltsby Janski - Controllers
Ok. Sorry about the question before. I see what you mean by jumpers and installation. Yes installed and jumpers . I will use your advice and play with the acceleration rate as you mentioned above. I will report back with my findings - JANSKIby Janski - Controllers
Thats great info. I was not aware of this. Does this mean that one needs to tune the motors for every 3d printer in marlin based on the stepper motors being used? Can you share some info on this subject tyby Janski - Controllers
QuoteCefiar Also before you do that: Have you confirmed the jumpers are installed under all the stepper drivers? If the drivers are doing full-steps, you will definitely be going too fast. How do i confirm the jumpers are installed ? Still new to the terminology. Can you explain ?by Janski - Controllers
PS: the motors vibrate as if they were preforming a function but do not move.by Janski - Controllers
Dear Rep Rappers, I have ran into a weird issue. Recently Completed : Ramps 1.4 Hardron Ord Bot. Fully functioning and steep learning curve. Thinking that I have this in the bag, I went ahead and purchased parts for the 2nd one: After Setup and Firmware upload: motors are not working properly! AHHH!! I checked Pots: all set correctly at 0.80v. So there is power going to the motors. 12v powerby Janski - Controllers
After building my first Ord Bot, I decided to make another one. After assembly I connected the motors and uploaded Marlin firmware onto arduino Mega 2560. When I try to test in pronterface, connect fine but does not move. X- moves slightly then vibrates Y- same as above Z- no response LCD display shows no errors. Please advise!. Do I adjust potentiometers? Power supply reads 12.5V Is thisby Janski - Reprappers
Thank you for the link and the explanation! I read through it and learned a lot about the potentiometers After further investigation I found the pots were set correctly. The problem was: y carriage belt was becoming loose due to lose fit on the belt clamp. After I tightened te mount and secured the belt, I no longer get the results show in pics above. Thanks again. Always learning new things wby Janski - Printing
Dear Reprapers, Please advise. Attached photo. After finally getting extruder to work properly. The prints are now coming out weird. As per pic, you can see the layers keep moving up in Y direction on my. Ord Bot. Should I replace the Y motor? test? Has anyone experienced this type of bug. ? Any suggestions appreciatedsmiling smiley Janskiby Janski - Printing
