100% Efficiency? Not for a Peltier... Electrical efficiency doesn't really tell you the whole story. Heat pumps have their own terminology - CP (sometimes COP) - coefficient of performance. Basically, how much heat (energy) does it take to move one unit of heat. If we ignore the environment, then it looks like efficiency is greater than unity - but without an environment, we don't have a heat pumby trebuchet03 - General
In practice, their autofeeder isn't actually needed so long as you have a fairlead and spooled material. Some of their blog pictures show the machines being burned in without feed motors. I blew up my feeder mosfet and despite having repaired it, I continue to run without the autofeeder. I've run a few pounds of material without it and am convinced I don't need it - it also makes the machine a tby trebuchet03 - General

I'm actually doing work in "frontier markets" Perhaps this perspective is useful... For 3D printers.... I see an opportunity for waste reduction. Not needing packaging for every single thing can help a lot. Every piece of clothing you're wearing came in it's own polyethylene bag. New product is the same way in every continent regardless of OECD rating of the country. For cost - I'm not convincby trebuchet03 - General
Agree with pretty much all points... The models posted by pp3dp are generally bigger - so the signal to noise ratio is favorable. I don't think they doubled the size (ref: cathedral playset) - but they def. used all of the 135mm build height. I wouldn't call it higher resolution... Instead, I would call it higher precision (from machine to machine). Removing the user from the assembly process hby trebuchet03 - General
The "lack of X" isn't limited to British journalism Although, the lack of technical know how isn't limited to journalism... Dare I say, a majority of people don't have the technical aptitude. It's easier to make a devices that serves them than try and change humans to be able to make the device. I have a lack of Karaoke know how (really, singing/music making in general) - so I buy music insteaby trebuchet03 - General
This feels like watching a train wreck... Brian, I don't know you... But you posted this: >At this point, I am not actively selling anything and really have nothing to gain. (Probably nothing to lose, either.) If you have nothing to gain and nothing to lose... Don't waste cycles treading water and dividing your attention - focus effort into something that you have something to gain from. Tby trebuchet03 - General
It's not just software - its the material too. MakerGear material doesn't work as well unless you turn down Up!'s temperature. Even after that, the support structures don't separate quite as nicely (better, but not as well as the OEM material). Allegedly, the material from reprapsource works well at stock temperature - but for me, the landed cost is more expensive than the cost of OEM materialby trebuchet03 - General
brnrd, PVA is widely used as a film mold release... I've used it in a liquid form - sprayed it on to fiberglass molds, let it dry (into a super thin sheet film) and then laid up really big parts. If the part was stubborn to remove, water was used to dissolve the PVA and release was fairly easy. If you were to dissolve it in your hands, it makes a pretty sticky situation.by trebuchet03 - General

If my tone comes across as patronization - my apologies (text doesn't convey intonation, a problem :p). Imagine the text in front of a medow with "frolic-y" music playing in the background This is generally better conversation over beers than in text though (happen to be in the Bay Area?). > If you're half-smart, you don't fight a suit for patent infringement, you establish that a patent shoby trebuchet03 - General
murrayd, I'm not saying a Poor man's patent is a patent either (it's just the colloquial term)... Only a patent is a patent and only a provisional gives you the ability to say "patent pending." Provisional's are cheap (less than $100 and you can file yourself, but they only last 12 months. From a legal stand point, mailing documentation to yourself does not satisfy any tests for prior art. I'm looking to print a Prusa mendel, but I'm having a hard time tracking down all of the parts... The printed parts list here: http://reprap.org/wiki/Prusa compared to the parts list on github (https://github.com/prusajr/PrusaMendel) has a few discrepencies. 1. y-idler - I grabbed it from the RepRap SVN, so I think we're good here 2. y-slider-better - completely missing from github, can't finby trebuchet03 - General
I pecked it with a #00 center. The drill diameter is .64mm on a 00 IF you get beyond the center drill's lip. The goal of a center drill is to provide a place for the drill bit lip relief to fall into so they can't (ideally) wander. If you still have a small counter sink - part it off (or use whatever operation of your choosing to get your final shape). I'll second the comments about careful setby trebuchet03 - General
