point taken with the Mac, that is why i try everything twice, once on the Mac and the second time on Ubuntu. For the sake of £15 I think I will order another cable ..... given the amount of time I (and you!) have put into this problem. At least that way I can eliminate that as a source of the problem before I find a machine from somewhere with Windows installed.by mattuwattu - Controllers
when trying to upload I get: avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding I too find it strange that I can fully operate my machine (i.e. send a gcode and it uses it) and could in theory print if the extruder was improved, but i can't upload the darn firmware!!by mattuwattu - Controllers
An alternative cable / chip feels like a favorite at the moment. I'll tweak the settings you suggest to see if that has any effect. I have just fired up ReplicatorG (which I've never had much sucess with) and although I can connect to the Mendel, if i jog an axis, it moves but then the software freezes withe the following error: [21:59:56] DEBUG:LineNr set [21:59:56] Unknown: DEBUG:LineNr setby mattuwattu - Controllers

To rule out the cable between the MB and the USB/TTL, i've just made another just in case. Didn't work either.by mattuwattu - Controllers
I located the preference.txt file on my Mac located /contents/resources/java/lib. It contains this which I have never edited: # ARDUINO PREFERENCES board = uno target = arduino upload.using = bootloader serial.port=COM1 serial.databits=8 serial.stopbits=1 serial.parity=N serial.debug_rate=9600by mattuwattu - Controllers
I tried to dig out the receipt / spec for the USB TTL board but I cannot find it. The details shown on the chip are: 101 B92 FT232 I've been on the FTDI site before to download drivers. I am wondering if I may have downloaded drivers FT232H, B or R ..... I cannot be certain.by mattuwattu - Controllers

not connected or not recognised usb to serial converter - can this be the case as i am able to operate my machine using the same connection?by mattuwattu - Controllers
Correction to above, "It compiles ok and I can select Sanguino and the appropriate USB tty port but I got the error: avrdude: Can't find programmer id "stk500" the error I get is actually: avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not respondingby mattuwattu - Controllers
Continuing from my other recent post, I have lost enjoyed 2 days of my life trying to upload the latest firmware to my motherboard! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The spec: - Version 1.2 motherboard (version of firmware unknown) - RepRap-Mendel-20091106 on Ubuntu - Installed and tried Arduino versions 11, 18 and 22 on two different Mac's - Installed and tried Arduino versions 18 andby mattuwattu - Controllers
Mattieu, Sounds like we are at similar point in our RepRap development! Just to close out my experience of this, it is exactly the same as yours .... software incompatiblity. It is a minefield and not for the feint hearted or none techies like me! So much so, that I have spent 2 WHOLE DAYS trying to flash the software .... using 3 different computers! One thing RepRap teaches ....... is patieby mattuwattu - RepRap Host
For good practice i wanted to share what happened to close out the problems i described in this thread. I sat down this weekend to do some testing described by Noobman but before i started making cables i tried the software. What i have is a set of gen 3 boards with firmware pre installed. As much as i have tried i am unable to update the firmware. I therefore decided to downgrade the RepRap hoby mattuwattu - Controllers
Hi I am pressing on and making good progress ( with help from you guys n gals!). I have fully functional x y z and the machine happlily follows the gcode paths in thsoe directions. I have got my extruder kind of working although i have had to revert to older versions of software .... More on that later. When i say the extruder kind of works, i mean that in the RepRap host software if i manuallby mattuwattu - Controllers
I am the same in terms of needing an upgrade ... I have an iPhone 3GS and an iPad 1, none of which have the forward facing camera. Fortunately I have a few Apple shares so when you guys upgrade you are helping me buy my next iPhone! Thanks!!by mattuwattu - General
How about this for a 3D scanner? Just search for Trimensional in iTunes and for 59p on your iPhone 4, iPod touch or iPad 2, you have the cheapest 3D scanner ever!by mattuwattu - General
That makes 2 of us here! I did exactly the same a while back and started a thread ..... Long and short is that it works fine, no rewiring needed. Just stick your opto at the other endby mattuwattu - General Mendel Topics
Hi world, Think i may have fried my extruder board trying to getting it to work and am trying to locate a replacement. I purchased a full kit off a chap on ebay (jaworowy) and have emailed them to see if I can purchase a replacement. Anyone know of other sources for one? I spotted techzone at $45 but the shipping is almost $30! Taby mattuwattu - Wanted
The explanation is perfect for a true noob like me, thanks! I see from your picture that you still have an extruder board being used for the thermistor and nozzle and if i'm working this out correctly, those signals go to the MB via the RS485. With this i've now learnt that SCL/SCA is telling the stepper about the step and direction which is your case is going to a separate board. Hence I guessby mattuwattu - Controllers
you are a gent ..... plenty for me to explore. Thanksby mattuwattu - Controllers
Hi Noobman Thanks for your input, greatly appreciated There is a distinct possibility that I may have fried a chip as the pot will have been cranked up beyond 50% at some point during my desperation to bring it to life. Is there an easy way to confirm that I have done damage to either of these chips .... diagnosic tools limited to a cheap multimeter. You knowledge of these a3949 and a3950 chipby mattuwattu - Controllers
I've confirmed it is not the stepper motor by driving it off the z axis board. I thought I spotted somewhere that you can test the extruder board by connecting it to one of the 10 pin connectors for the x, y or z of the motherboard. I can't find this anywhere! Any tips? Hi all, I'm almost there, on the home straight with a nicely moving Reprap in the three axes. Thanks for everyones help so far. I'm stuck good and proper now with the extruder. Hi, The free CAD software offerings can be a minefield from what I have seen. I've been trained with commercial packages such as AutoCAD, Pro-Engineer etc and I find it pretty easy to pickup most CAD packages. However, I find the free ones can be a bit heavy going, partly because they aren't always that intuitive. For anyone that is new to CAD altogether this could be even more frustrating.by mattuwattu - General
Male I am. You sense my frustration?! I'm having a little break from the build, partly due to time shortages but mainly as i've been close to launching it, or my computers out the window! I've tried Linux, Vista and Mac OS and each has hit a dead end. Assembly, no problem, making a computer talk to a home made machine, hmmmm. Different problems on different OS's. I don't give up that easyby mattuwattu - General
