Did you try the existent dual extruder Marlin firmware mod (X2) with the replicator? I've been printing with it for a while and it is pretty solid. It might save some time. If there is any compatibility issue I can probably fix it prety fast. BTW, there is now a GUI frontend for the script merging G-code files in the sofware bundle for the dual extruder X2 machines:

I'd add to the chicken and egg problem the fact that there isn't that much content yet that makes good use of the second extruder. The way support is generated (at least in skeinforge 43 I've bee using) doesn't make the second extruder quite useful (surely because skeinforge was designed for printing the support by the same extruder and the same material). I'm in Portsmouth. I've built a modded version of Prusa's Mendel with RAMPS 1.4 electronics. Currently running Marlin firmware, Pronterface frontend and Skeinforge. I've started with Sprinter firmware (its very nice and easy to use, would recommend), but eventually moved to Marlin when saw how much better it makes the curved surfaces. One more bug report. The "infillPerimeterOverlap" multiplier seems to be ignored (saw on both master and daily branches several days back, had to add the multiplier to the "fillInset" calcualtion to be able to adjust the overlap).

Just found out that when cool "do not slow down more than" limit is hit, the flow rate calculation is off. That is on the daily branch. Saw it when tried to print the _40x10.stl calibration piece. Without cool limit each layer is printed w/ 1.720172 mm of plastic at 527.878738mm/min. With the limit set at 15mm/s it is only extruding 0.9999mm per layer at the 900mm/sec. Looks good. You didn't mention the extruder hardware and the print beds. Are they included in the price? I've completed the build and moving on to the bring up stage. The only necessary part I forgot about is the thermistor for the heated bed. I also decided to buy PTFE tubing + a matching nuts for bowden mount. Then also spent extra on aluminium pulleys (e-bay from China) and a 5lb roll of ABS

Sorry to hear that you went through all those troubles. By the way, my first printer (that I'm using for printing parts now) is Makerbot's Cupcake CNC. It also runs on the gen3 electronics, but the only serious troubles I've had were w/ driving the extruder DC motor. I ended up spendig $602 for all the parts except plastic (and I bet something is going to be missing). I did consider Makergear's kit, but rejected for 3 reasons: - price - it's Prusa (by that time I already decided to make Mendel) - it doesn't allow me to save on printing my own plastic parts I'll probably will use Makergear's hot end though (if coudn't find a good kit that includes the hot end). Still hesitating between 0.35 mm nozzle w/ 1.75mm filament and 0.5mm nozzle w/ 3mm filament. I onl
